My mom is a smoker and is very, very ill. She refuses to quit, even though her lungs now work at about 20% efficiency (doctor's estimate). She has all kinds of lung problems and can hardly walk more than 10 feet at a time. The doctors have barely saved her life 3 times now, but she still won't quit. I figure my soon-to-be-born child will be lucky to have any memories of her, as she'll likely die in the next year or two. So, I am curious as to how many of you smoke and why on earth do you do it?

Personally I hate people smoking, and believe it should be banned from all public places. I like my right to breath clean air when I go to an establishment. If I have people over to my apartment I send smokers out on the balcony if they need a puff even if it is -30C outside.

The truth is they probaly started due to advertising, peers, the thing to do. But like many drugs people can become addicted and it becomes harder to quit. For some it is harder to quit than others (due to both genetic makeup and will power). The wierd thing is that cigerettes are much worse for you than marijunna (which can be used to treat some aliments) yet the government has this thing against the evil plant but allows cigerettes. So if someone can explain the logic of our government behind this I would love to hear.

Sorry to hear about your mom.

What irritated me is when I used to take the bus and it was the middle of winter, the smokers would smoke inside the bus shelter. If you didn't want to breathe their smoke, you had to stand outside. I wanted to smack them. A friend of mine was able to vomit on comand, and if anyone smoked near him, he'd vomit at their feet.

That annoys me too, and especially if someone has kids too! I'm sorry, for you, Aranabas, with your Mother. If I were you, tell her straight out that you are deeply concerned for her health and that she should quit.

I grew up in a house where smoking wasn't allowed. So of course I had to find out what the big deal was! I smoked for a few months in High school but quit when I needed to start buying my own. For some reason, even though I had no problems before, after I quit I couldn't stand to be around it very long without feeling sick. I even refused to let my husband smoke in our house. Needless to say, he spent a lot of time outside or somewhere else. My dad even made his mom go outside no matter the weather, when she stayed with us. Made it even more fun for her because we had lots of cats and she didn't like them. (And you know how cats are when they know someone doesn't like them!)

Sorry to hear about your mother Arnabas. My grandparents smoke too and refuse to quit. They both seem to be in pretty good health for some reason. Why people smoke is beyond me. The smell is just terrible, and as person who's had asthma I like to breathe fresh air. We need some smoker's opinions lol.

My uncle died of lung cancer a few monthes ago, because of smoking. He would not quit when it went into remission, and it came back and killed him. He went from around 225 pounds to about 75. Smoking is bad. I won't eat at restaurants that do not have a good, non-smoking section. If the smokers want to die from it, go ahead, but don't kill me too.

I avoid restaurants with smokers, too. I find it crazy that the smoking and non-smoking sections are sometime side-by-side, with no walls between them. I'll be in the non-smoking section and someone 5 feet away will be smoking. It's stupid.
I see that we're all non-smokers here so far. Guess the smokers don't want to admit it, or maybe we're just a healthy bunch.
