In December, President Bush signed the "Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act of 2003" (CAN-SPAM [img]graemlins/spam3.gif[/img] ) intended to create a national standard for addressing the growing problem of unsolicited e-mail. It could lead to the creation of a "do not email" registry. FTC has opposed the measure, arguing most [img]graemlins/spam3.gif[/img] email comes from overseas, where it has no jurisdiction. This statute makes spamming techniques, such as masking identities and disguising the locations of computers sending spam, criminal. This act will preempt state laws regulating the use of email to send commercial messages, except to the extent that those state laws prohibit falsity or deception in any email message or attachment.
I can think of abuses by the government that might result from this, but its more fun to think of abusing [img]graemlins/spam3.gif[/img] spammers.

So is this a good thing or a bad thing? I have no problem with someone smackin it to the spammers [img]smile.gif[/img] altho my emails to my friends and reletives by some definitions can be considered spam...am I now a felon? |
