I just saw the ad from Club for Growth and it really made me angry. You see I live in Vermont and it's bad enough they are bashing my ex-Governor, but I don't like what they are saying about my State. Now I don't expect my calling them to have any kind of effect on their disgusting advertising style, but I had to let them know that I did not appreciate the lies they were spouting about VT, though the person on the other end of the line said he would pass my comments along. Few people in Vermont eat Sushi, drink lattes, or want expanded government. And many people do drive Volvos, but they are pretty old and probably bought used.
I think I did read the NY Times once, my paper is the Burlington Free Press BTW. Guess I'm pretty mad! This is the ad:Here And here is the text: "A dignified older couple walks out of a barber shop. An off-screen announcer asks what they think of Howard Dean’s plan to raise taxes on a typical family by $1,900. "Without hesitation, the husband responds: 'What do I think? Well, I think Howard Dean should take his tax-hiking, government-expanding, latte-drinking, sushi-eating, Volvo-driving, New York Times-reading…' "His wife continues: '…body piercing, Hollywood-loving, left-wing freak show back to Vermont where it belongs.'" Mark [EDIT] And I personally have no body-piercings...not that there is anything wrong with that. [ 01-08-2004, 03:55 PM: Message edited by: skywalker ] |

Every time that add runs, Dean gains votes. Those who would vote for him anyway are going to roll their eyes. Some of those who have not made up their minds, will think of all the adjectives one could toss in from of President Bush's name and be a bit offended at the stupidity and stereotype-pandering behind this article.
People drive beat-up old Volvos and Saabs in Vermont because they will START in cold weather. It's that simple. Vermont does have a few different populations. There is the Chittenden/Burlington crowd, basically left-wing hippies who fell of the Grateful Dead bus to become lawyers and businessmen in Burlington. Then there are the "take back Vermont"ers, who call themselves "real Vermonters" and who wanted to go burn down the country's smallest capital building once the Civil Union act came waltzing out of it. Then there are those Kingdom people -- who are just plain wierd. ![]() |

Come to think of it, who wants a "club for growth?" Growth is not necessarily good. The population grows at 1% each year -- roughly adding a new New York City to the planet every 365 days. Even if you are the fattest, most cigar-smoking, oil-loving, pave-the-planet ideolog, warhawk, treecutting, chemical-bathing, smokestack building, liberal-hater on the planet you should at least know enough simple math to know that at SOME point in the future growth MUST stop. "Club for Growth" -- pfffft. It's like "club for excess" or "club for girth." I suppose the club imagines a kind of human existence where we attack the planet as if it's a pie-eating contest.

I don't see where the ad said anything about the people of Vermont. They were talking about Dean, who is a typical liberal politician. And that is the way many people think of them, as elitist snobs. most of the citizens of Vermont are nothing like that. Unfortunately for the state, they are the ones who want to secede and become part of New Hampshire!

Dean happens to be fiscally conservative. He balanced the state's budget every year he was Governor and cut a lot when the years were lean. Mark [ 01-09-2004, 12:48 PM: Message edited by: skywalker ] |

Which is why he gets my vote. If President Bush was a better fiscal conservative, I'd probably vote for him. This one issue decides how I spend my money. I don't care if there's a tax cut if we don't have jobs and if we're driving our children's country so deep in debt that they'll never pay it off. No matter how big the country, at some point other nations quit loaning it money.

Actually no I don't see it as dissing vermont..you all seemed to like him, closed and unpublic as his deals are and so since you like him, how is it dissing you hoping that you get him back? Its like saying that me getting my girlfriend back(should I loose her) would be derogatory to me......oh ok they DIssed Vermont.... Just WHY is vermont such a big deal anyway? not large, not a huge population its just another out of the way smallish state. As much as I hear about Vermont and it's politics you would think it was DC or Texas or California....come to thinkof it..why is the NewHampshire primary so all fired hot stuff? Im serious, I do not understand why a small NewEngland state is such a big deal. Dean happens to be fiscally conservative. He balanced the state's budget every year he was Governor and cut a lot when the years were lean. Dean has other issues along with his temper that are going to loose the presidential race for him. He is and has gone waaaaaay to the left in order to win the primaries (or at least he hopes to) and will have a seriously hard time getting back to the center for the real race. Mark
|

I dislike Bush's big government decisions too, the prescription drug plan, the immigration proposal and some others in particular...but I think what we see is that since Dean is running HARD left, Bush may be strategerizing and gobbeling up some of the middle ground votes that Dean ahs left behind in his westward sail.....we shall see. |

Unless I missed your point, MagiK, dissing Vermont is such a big deal because I live there.
Seems there are a lot of people out there who don't like others dissing the USA. I find this hits a bit closer to home as far as I'm concerned. BTW, have I ever said I am not thinskinned, crap like this bugs me a lot of the time, that's all. Mark |
