If you're a mage, you can cast the Find Familiar spell, and create your own familiar. These are tiny creatures that have special abilities depending on their species. The species of the familiar depends on your alignment.

Lawful Good: Pseudo Dragon
Neutral Good: Pseudo Dragon
Chaotic Good: Fairy Dragon
Lawful Neutral: Ferret (I'm not sure about that.)
True Neutral: Rabbit
Chaotic Neutral: Cat
Lawful Evil: Imp (I'm not sure about that either.)
Neutral Evil: Dust Mephit
Chaotic Evil: Quasit

I think. If I'm wrong, somebody correct me on this.

Yes, you can use a spell scroll without memorizing it. Put the scroll you want to use in the holding slot (I don't know how else you call that. Item Slot?) ... which is the place you normally put potions. When you click on the character holding the scroll, you should be able to see an icon of the scroll next to the spell button (err... anybody care to explain this better? I think I'm being confusing.)

Yep, pay the dude.

1. A Familiar is sort of a pet that mages can have. You can learn the spell 'Find Familiar' or something, cast it, and you should get a familiar. The Familiars have special abilities which will help the mage.

2. Yes, you can in some cases.

3. Yes.

a familiar is a conjured pet cast by a mage and if ya familiar dies ya lose 1 point of con.

mage:cast familiar
red dragon: cast fireball familiar
familiar:damage taken 50
familiar:dead

if ya have a con. of 18 it should now be 17 so look out

That's why, most of the time, it's safer to keep your familiar stashed in your backpack, where it won't get hurt by anything.

Familiars are also very useful, in that when the Mage casts Find Familiar, his hitpoints go up by 1/2 of the amount of the Familiar's hitpoints. Most Familiars have 24 HP, so your Mage now has 12 HP more than he used to. And if you're a Fighter/Mage, those extra HP are also doubled when you use Tenser's Transformation. Not bad.

first of all, search for the familiar question and my member number at the same time. recently i posted the entire list, with data, of familiars, right off the scroll, but i'm too lazy to repeat it here.

for scrolls, anyone with 9 intelligence can cast green protection or green cursed scrolls out of their quick item slots. Anyone who can cast mage spells and has 9 intelligence can cast mage spells out of slots. anyone with 9 intelligence and can cast cleric spells can cast cleric scrolls out of slots. some scrolls can be used by anyone, regardless of all stuff. (restoration, stoneshape scroll)

(btw, when you pick up a usable item, it highlights everywhere it can go. just move stuff around between party members until something new lights up. )
