Alright, I'm looking to buy myself a GeForce sometime soon. One that's better than my lousy old GeForce 2 MX. So I'm wondering, is it even worth it to buy a GeForce 3 or will they be so outdated soon that I shouldn't even bother and instead buy a GeForce 4?

Oh and what'd be the best kind of GeForce 3 I could buy? And are there any brands that should be avoided at all costs?

I would suggest you get the GeForce 4 TI 4200 card. Something between the other TI cards but with alof of power and quick memory. A bit cheaper, not by much but enough to make it a real good buy. Itīs been promoted as best worth buy in graphics card by some INternetmagazines etc..

Iīm gonna go for an ASUS one myself.

The GF4 Mx is a bit slower than the Ti500, so if I were buying it'd depend on how much I wanted to pay. If I had the cash I'd get a true GF4, if not I'd get a 4mx or ti500, whichever was cheapest.

So you're saying not to buy a GeForce 3? Too outdated already?

Neb, I posted this very same question over at the TTLG website that is dedicated to the old Looking Glass Studios game designers best known for the Thief and System Shock games (both which are excellent, I might add). In a nutshell this is what I received in response: Stay away from the MX series of any GForce cards. The GForce 3 is still very reliable and going down significantly in price. The GF4 as well as the Radeon 8500 are at this moment the top of the line and the respondents seemed to be split on the choice of preference.
BUT HERE IS SOME VERY SIGNIFICANT NEWS: Two days ago I was at www.gamespot.com and under their PC News section they had a report that Nvidia will be coming out with a new chip this August that will be a step above the GForce 4! Think about it, the G4 has only been out 6 months. Another thing to think about is that the Video Cards of today or even two years ago can handle almost anything that is in game play. I have a Viper 770 and I have no problems with it whatsoever doing the RPG's that I love so well. It seems the software lags behind the hardware significantly. The only game out right now that demands high specs at the moment is Morrowwind. As much as I would love to play the game I refuse at this moment to buy a whole new video card just to play one game. If games start going this way then I'll have to reconsider. If you can wait I'm sure it won't be too long before the G4 starts dropping as well. Hope this helps.

Definatley not a MX card!!

Neb, the TI4200 series cost something round 3000 Skr, which I think is roughly the same as you would have to pay. If you get geForce 3 card, you sonīt save that much money, but they are still good cards, but I still would go with the GeForce 4 card if I were to spend the money for one. Gainward has even lower prices then what I stated above, and itīs not the 420MX card I was talking about.

I'm only 16, so I can't really afford to buy a GF4, I'll just stick with my nice, shiney, GF3 and it's 128 mb Heh, it'll last me for a while..... And according to what I hear, the GF3 cards actually have a few "abilities" that GF4 cards do not, is this true?

The GF4MX is just an upgraded version of the GeForce2(!)MX. Which means it lacks all the extra's that were included in the GeForceIII and IV. Perhaps a Radeon7500 would be a good choice.

Neb i think the GF 3 is more than good for about 1-2 year yet for games to come and here in norway you can get the Gainward AGP GeForce3 Ti/500XP 128MB 4ns
Titanium200,"Jumbo,Golden Sample" Retail NOK kr 2,400,- so i think it is not any more ekspensive in Danmark so i will have buy that card now and because it will be a new chip from Nvidia later this year then maby the gf4 is not any good choice right now!
If you are interested you can se here about the g.cards!
