I want to dual class my kensai to a mage at either level 12 or 15, but I want more of the bonuses you get at 15th level. However, by the time I get to that level, I'll either be in Spellhold or the Underdark, and I've been told that those aren't good places for a newly dualed character.
This is my first time dual-classing. Any suggestions?

I have only dual classed twice. Once with my Kensai and with my Bounty Hunter. Waiting until he reaches level 15 would be nice, but it will take quite a while to get your mage up to level 16 so you can get your Kensai abilities back. I'm not even sure you could do it before you finish SOA, unless you were to take some drastic actions like dump your entire party and go crazy memorizing every spell you can get your hands on, then take them back spellcaster by spellcaster and memorizing every spell for them you can get your hands on to get the most points out of it. Needless to say that is extreme and would likely kill any romance you might have going. Finish all areas and quests before you go. And I still don't know if that would be enough to get you there, at least in time to make it worth it. Anyone else?

I'm assuming you've played before, since you know what to expect. If that's the case and you want a challenge, dual after reaching Spellhold.
Otherwise, dual whenever you want. It won't materially affect your enjoyment of the game, either way. |

I dualclassed my kensai at level 18 and go solo the whole time, but i do have TOB of course because without TOB it would be crazy to do this. It takes a while but when you reached level 19 wizard, you are scary powerfull. You have many kensai abilities and spells are almost at the highest. You have to play a long time only at a wizard but when kensai is active again, a new god is born!!!

Then level 15 it shall be. (I have ToB) can't believe I forgot that....

Once for fun, I Created a Kensei, leveled him to 39 (thanks to the xp cap remover) then dualed him to mage. It was funny going around killind everything with a level 39/40 Kensei Mage.

I tend to favor getting my first class nice and strong before Dualing, especially going from a Fighter. I'm such a big fan of Saving Throws that I would wait until Level 15 or 18--possibly even 21--before Dualing a Fighter, as Warriors have such great Saving Throws and their THACO stops improving around level 22 or so.
Of course, I'd have to check an EXP table to see if that still leaves you enough room to get a really high-level Mage. It should be fine for Dualing to a Thief.
