OK, just started this game and I had boosted Charisma and Intelligence but my strength and agility were lacking so the only way I could get past the guy at the of the temple was to use a weapon. Then I kill him and my villagers are all peeved at me. I assume this is one way to go about the game but I didn't want this so I started over boosted agility and put strength at 8. Now my Intelligence and Charisma are at 6's. I hope I will not pay to dearly for this latter on. I tagged Small Guns, Unarmed, and First Aid hopefully that is OK. I am expecting to start off with small guns at some point, unarmed is good at the start, and First Aid it seemed OK I just got of Fallout Tactics so it seemed a good skill.

As for traits I picked "Gifted" and "sex appeal". OK with this games I like to pick one fun trait, it was Bloody Mess, or this. Is sex appeal OK? Will women flock and try to seduce me? Or is it totally worthless. I am hoping the trait will add some fun but we will see.

well with it depends on you i guess.. sex appeal WILL help you in a city (hint: vice city ).. but not throughout the rest of the game if thats what your after.

i was never an unarmed peson nor melee.. i just saved up my points for the long run. if your going for melee or unarmed then your going to need str for sure and agility to get you out of tight spots and ac class. and dont worry about weapons since your going to get those as well for unarmed or melee.. as for small guns i was never a fan of that as well. im more of a sniper rifle . but each his own. there are so many tactics in this game.

oh yeah.. first aid ok.. but dont worry about the other skills. your future henchpeople will have thier own speicalty and you can use thier skills like repair or science.

last but not the last.. bloody mess? well if you do want to see the worse way to die.. youll definitly see that.

good luck and enjoy i know i did.. also if your stuck do see the walkthrough.. i got stuck in certain parts.. oh yeah on last thing.. once your done once..go over a second time around with the walkthough im nealy 100% sure that you will miss a good quest here and there.

a good walkthru can be found at www.gamespot.com just search for fallout2

The trick is check the temple guard's health from time to time. Click on him and select the "binocular" option. If his status is almost dead, you should end your turn by not doing anything. After 1 or 2 rounds, he will stop and surrender.

I don't think sex appeal plays a big part in the game, unless you wish to become porn star (seriously!).

However, unarmed combat is only useful if your STR is high or your will be inflicting small amount of damage only. For starters, I would advice you to invest more points in small arms, then gradually work your way up in heavy weapons and energy weapons. As you should know, later in the game, most energy weapons outclassed small arms and heavy wepons, although the .223 pistol is still my all time favorite.

Or you can search for "falche2"-- Fallout Charcter Editor 2. You can use it to make your character a little bit more powerful or add more points to certain skills. Although I vowed never to exploit this, I always found myself creating a uber character whenever I replay Fallout 2.

Unarmed Combat is surprisingly very lethal in Fallout 2.

The trick to killing with an unarmed hit is not by damage, but by scoring a fatal critical. A target can have hundreds of HP, but if you score a fatal critical, you can deal only 2-4 Dmg and still instant-kill the target. A perk at level 21 will ensure that all your unarmed hits score as criticals.

ADD] There's a perk that gives you a better of scoring a fatality on a critical too. It's called, "Better Criticals".

As your skill in unarmed combat rises, you gain access to more deadly unarmed skills. There is a very powerful unarmed weapon in the game too, and it is easily gotten.

It is actually possible to solo the game using nothing but your fists to do the talking. No guns, no weapons, just your fists.

Even for the last fight, bwerwahahahaha!

ADD] STR can be left at 5 or 6, but AGI is always maxed at 10 for a player who wants to follow the route of unarmed combat. AGI can be 9 if you don't mind using a Perk to change it to 10.

Fallout 2 shining strength is in its' ability to let you win the game the way you want to. Whether it be by blazing glory or diplomatic means.

My usual choice of tag skills is Unarmed and Small Guns, with the 3rd one being either Doctor or Speech.

I do not use cheats in Fallout 2, because the game lets you play no matter what your strengths are.

So just sit down and decide what you want your character to be and stick to it.

I think I will stick with my current character. I think he is well rounded and my choices were not bad. Anyway I have started, thanks for the input everyone.

You had it right the first time! High scores in intelligence, charisma and speech allow you to talk your way out of the fight at the end of the temple. Choose 'why do we have to fight' and then choose 'I disagree, there is always a peaceful solution' etc etc. Not only does this allow you to keep your idolised Arroyo reputation, but you also get DOUBLE the experience points (600 instead of 300) for talking your way out of the fight than you do for resorting to violence.
Ultimately there is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to play the game of course. I just personally try to be a peaceful diplomat rather than a belligerent warrior when I play an RPG.

Speech is very effective.
I personally tagged:
- Small guns. Assault/Hunting rifles count as small guns, and a head-shot from one of those babies will take out most human and animal opponents.
- Doctor . This is infinately superior to first aid. Heals more damage and fixes broken limbs. First aid is obselete if you have a high doctor skill.
- Speech. As mentioned earlier, a high speech skill can allow you to bypass even the toughet battles. It also allows for more experience points via increased conversation options, and can offset the negative effects of a bad reputation. Plus, it just feels good to have people being friendly to you wherever you go

For traits, I chose
- gifted : this gives you SIX extra stat points, which is a huge bonus! Gaining five fewer skill points per level can be offset by an intelligence level of 10 (which I always choose, being a thinking man ) as well as a few levels of the 'educated' perk later on.

- Small frame - this grants you an additional stat point. Being able to carry less doesn't really matter much, as you can just get your party members to lug any heavy stuff you find for you. Sulik is great for this.

Seeing as it's very difficult to alter your core stats after character creation, gaining as many stat points as possible is a solid character strategy.

Having a default INT of 10 is wasted actually, considering that you can upgrade it in the game.

For those who wish to conserve their perks, an INT of 9 is sufficient. For those who don't mind using a perk, an INT of 8 is all they need at the start.

The one stat that is a luxury is END. Mine is usually 4. If you solo, CHA is set at the bare minimum.

Unless you intend to solo a diplomat, then high CHA is necessary.

Fallout 2 is a great game, one reason being that you can play the game in so many different ways. Unarmed is my favorite fighting type, targeting body parts is definitely the key (go for the eyes!). Any weapon type is viable though, except maybe throwing. I tried a character specializing in thrown weapons and never had enough grenades to go around. I never used first aid much, I just carried lots of stims.

I suggest that you play without a walkthrough, and then play again, and again, and again, there are a ton of quests and you wont see them all after one game. Leave the walkthrough for the 6th or 7th time, if you really want it.
