Just starting out -- would the following choices of major skills make a viable character? ( or are there any mistakes I'm going to regret later when I start the game again after hours of play ??

Major --
Heavy armour
Long blade
Security
Destruction
Restoration

Minor --
Medium Armour
Armourer
Sneak
Short Blade
Enchant

TIA, Pang.

Personally I'd drop the medium armor. I also would consider athletics, acrobatics, and light armor somewhere in the mix. However, there is no one perfect combination as many can attest to. What do you envision this character to be? For example, my character is a fighter but has some serious magic along with a few thieving attributes. Others concentrate in magic with a few skills in weapons and thiieving. While still others choose the thief mode supported by magic. Do whatever strikes your fancy. But I truely do realize the time it takes to choose the combination you want to start out in.

In your major skill you put long blade and destruction together, from my experience i ended up using much of the long blade and completely didn't use the destrcution skill which is a waste and I regret it. so you might wanna change the destruction into something else.

In your minor skill you put enchant, now enhcanting is fun in teory but practically it is one of the most difficult skill to train ( partly due to a bug ). you might end up not training it at all because of that. Also you put short blade, now generally it's a good idea to put only one weapon skill ( except marksmanship ) in major or minor skill because you'll use that always, having two is a waste. Also you put medium armor, like the weapon skill it is best to put only one type of armor skill because having two type is a waste.

In addition to the above, I would put security as a minor or even a misc. skill as it takes many, many locks and a long time to get it up, and you end up buying for training because it raises so slowly.
I would change it with marksman, which is easy to raise and very powerful and fun combined with sneak.

Just out of curiosity, what is the bug?

I have found a reliable way of training the enchant skill. Instead of using the filled soul gems to enchant items, I use them to recharge enchanted items. It fails a lot less often than enchanting (or at least, it does for me), and raises the skill steadily. I have a sword enchanted with soul trap, so I can use the sword to trap the soul, and use the gem to recharge the sword. It's been working well for me.

Then it must be real easy to get to kill him by accident.

Who and where is he?

Major --
Heavy armour - good
Long blade - good
Security - good, decent value to start, plus easy to find trainers.
Destruction - ok, not great i don't use it much.
Restoration - again just ok, after the early game i never use this school of magic.

Minor --
Medium Armour - light would be a better choice, keeping in mind it's a backup armour skill. at the very least it's much lighter than the heavy armours.
Armourer - i'm not a fan of this but it's a handy skill to have, i usually keep this as a misc skill & buy training to the point where it's mostly effective.
Sneak - i find sneak irratating. the very slow movement really bugs me.
Short Blade - good as a backup weapon, if a bit redundant.
Enchant - i don't see the point of this, i usually have enchanters enchant my gear anyway.

----

various notes -

you don't have a personalty skill, speachcraft is very handy for most paths.

no block = no shield, ok for big weapons i guess.

alchemy is imho better than enchanting.

alteration is very handy for getting around, water breathe / walk & levitate. could be a good swap for destruction.
