I stumbled across the Runesword site last night, and while I am planning on checking the game out (Runesword I is a free download), I was wondering if anyone around here had played it or even heard of it. This is a CRPG game from an independent designer that is, apparently, wholly customizable by the user, and while the graphics are not the kind to knock your socks off, it looks like the gameplay has some decent potential.

The designer of the game is part of a co-op that has done a bunch of games on many different topics, from 18th century warfare to 4x space games. They've all received pretty good reviews, but very little exposure (ie, they don't advertise). If you're interested in something apart from the mainstream crapola published by the big houses, check out www.shrapnelgames.com. It really does have something for almost everyone...

I was into Runesword a few years back. The game was quite okay but it is mainly for those whom wish to "make" your own RPG game. I made quite a few modules (mainly weapons and armors) but gave it all up when the game developer sold the version 2 (Runesword II) to Shrapnel.

On thing I noticed about the built in engine is that it is very much CPU dependent. For example, if I am ruuning on Pentium 200, the animation delay that I set would be out of propotion for say AMD K6III. Therefore even if you downloaded any fan made modules, you are advised to tweak the various delays to come out right on your PC, especially on faster CPUs like PIII or P4.

I believed Runesword II has an improved engine and supports more function and commands. If you really enjoy Runesword I, you might want to give it a try. Anyway, AFAIK only the most hardcore fun would buy the version II because the price isn't exactly cheap compared to other bargain CRPGs in the market.

I played it some, quite some time ago. At the time it was about no decent modules available for it... and the editor didn't let me mess with as much as I'd like. It was quite fun though...
