My long blade skill is 68, and I've asked two people now for training and I get a 'I can teach no more on that skill' or somesuch message. Is there a limit to when you can be trained, or are some trainers just less skilled than others and can only train to a certain point, while other better ones can train on past 68 (or wherever the limit is, this was the first time I asked for training on long blade )?

You're correct. Some trainers are more skilled than the others. But there is only one person per skill that can train people to 100.

To expand on what Kakero has said, each of your skills has a governing attribute that determines how well you perform that skill. ie Long Blade = Strength. Speechcraft = Personality. You cannot raise a skill past the value of the governing attribute. You have to raise your stats first (though that's never usually a problem as the game lets you gain levels far to quickly for my liking!)

What IS a problem is trying to remember the locations of and travelling to all the different trainers that you're gonna need. For this reason i wholeheartedly recommend the 'Balmora University' mod which can be downloaded from here. You mentioned in another thread, however, that you haven't modded your game yet so this mod may be a bit spoilerish.

IMO there's no need to train in long blade: you will get 100% proficient in a few levels without bothering to spend money and look for faraway trainers. Also some trainers are accessible only if you join a certain faction, IIRC.

I think that B_Part wants to say that the skill would rise to 100 quickly even without training. It did for me.

Yeah I have found that, that's why I've never bothered getting training for it before - too expensive for something I'll get myself soon enough anyway. But I needed a couple of points to get advancement in the Imperial Legion and I didn't want to wait
