I started with a char (made by me) that has long blade, marksmanship, light armor, stalth and security as majors, speechcraft, merchant, medium armor, conjuration and mystisim (sp?) as minor. I am wood elf, level 1. Joined the thieves, fighters and mages guild. I play a very nasty, double crossing, power mad assassin that kills people for money, and sometimes for fun.
Strength and agilty as prime characteristics (sp?), and stealth as specialization. sign-the ritual. I have several problems. 1)these 2 poachers from the egg mine constantly kill me. I do not kill even one of them. 2)how i scribe magic stuff into my magic book? 3)Is there any special way of fighting, instead of "use the best attack"? 4)i was almost killed by 2 cave rats. any decent armour nearby (i am in Balamata or whatever this town is called) ? i am going to do in the nearby future some guild "duties", save some money buy the equipment and proceed on due course. The problem with this tactic that i will not practise almost any skill. Killing a rat in a week of game time is not good at all. comments? suggestions? Thanks in advance.

To answer number two, scribing magic into your spellbook is done by talking to people who have "Spells" as an option (Where it says "Barter", "Training", "Enchanting", etc.). You buy the spell you want from them and then it will be added to your repetoire. I'm guessing you are in Balmora: there are several people in the Mage Guild building who can teach you spells, and possibly in the Temple as well.
As for guild quests, you might want to go outside, into the open fields, and practise your fighting skills for a bit first. Slay lots of rats, nix-hounds, mudcrabs, etc. Then when your major and minor skills have improved sufficiently and maybe you even gained some levels, it will get easier. I have Light Armour as a minor skill myself and I've used Chitin Armour from the beginning without running into too much trouble. Whichever armour you wear will become increasingly more effective the longer you wear it. There's an armorer in Balmora across the road from the Mage Guild. Be sure to remember having an armorer repair your armor and weapons every once in a while: they deteriorate and become less effective with use. You can also train your armorer skill and do it yourself.

In regard to question #1, try increasing your level before taking on more challenging opponents (the poachers).
In regard to question #3, using your best attack is probably best for you now. That way you'll do the most damage. If you scroll over your current weapon, you'll notice that there are three types of attack:
In regard to question #4, your armor rating is totally dependent to your skill for that particular piece. So, if your light armor skill is high, you'll receive more protection than if it were low. Same goes for unarmored, medium, and heavy. And, as Mel has pointed out, your armor will give you less protection as it deteriorates. So make sure to keep in top condition, especially your chest piece (which provides 40% of your total armor rating). If you're going to be doing guild quests, I can almost guarantee you you'll be training your skills. Also, if I were you, I'd try to raise my sneak and marksmanship first. That way, you can avoid any unnecessary risks; and those that you do have to face, you'll be able to face from far away. |

1. As mentioned before, train up your fighting skills by fighting easy monsters first before taking on any difficult foes.
2. See Melusine's post. 3. See Nanobyte's post 4. Do you have Tribunal installed? In that case there's a very good light armour available from the beginning of the game. Otherwise, seeing that you have medium armour as a minor skill, you might want to buy some Bonemold armour. You can find those in both Pelagiad and Balmora.

1)these 2 poachers from the egg mine constantly kill me. I do not kill even one of them.
human opponents are alot stronger than rats and cliff racers. go and fight a bunch of mudcrabs, scribs, rats, and such. keep fighting. if your endurance is low, then you won't gain many hit points, so work on raising that (although if you get any multipliers, raise those skills first). you are level one, so you shouldnt be able to kill many of the human opponents. 3)Is there any special way of fighting, instead of "use the best attack"? yes, if you turn off your option to use best attack then moving sideways will slash, moving straight forward will stab, and standing still will chop. this makes the game immensely more difficult as you have to move properly for each weapon you have, and it severely limits your freedom to move around and dodge while still making a strong attack. 4)i was almost killed by 2 cave rats. any decent armour nearby (i am in Balamata or whatever this town is called) ? first off, if you're still level one, restart the game and make a new character. medium armour is almost worthless... not to mention you only need any skill in one armor type. for good armor, take a walk to the ghost gate (go out balmora towards fort moonmoth, go right and past the fort into the foyada and turn left to go up the lava river. keep going and fighting and you will arrive. steal as much glass armor as possible with your sneak skill). ultimately though, one of those skills is going to be a wasted talent. i restarted five times before i got a character i liked, once when i had already reached level five. theres no shame in starting over, and it sucks to play with a character who has a debilitating flaw like a wasted talent. not to mention you can train any of the skills you want later in the game. finally, not to mention having tribunal installed, what race and gender are you, as these make a major difference in your skill abilities and attributes.

Agree with all the above, wanted to mention a couple helpful hints:
-You can pause in mid battle by hitting your inventory key. Click and drag health potions to use them. Your health won't go up until you return to play, but unlike scrolls or healing spells, the potion will take effect by itself. -Its a very good idea to work on a ranged weapon skill ASAP: being able to knock a couple of hp off an enemy before he can range you can make all the difference. -for these early too-tough battles, consider getting your hands on a summoning item or scroll: just giving your opponents something else to whack is great. -the egg poachers are just inside a 'load' door, IIRC. That means you can go in, do some damage, step back out, and they can't follow you. Heal, switch weapons, whatever, before going back in. They will be waiting just in side the door, but they won't heal or anything while you are gone. -I LOVE having my weapons keyed to the mouse wheel: scroll the wheel to switch weapons, fast and easy. But since we are all in repeaty mode, the egg poachers aren't intended to be taken on at level one. Click 'level' in the attributes section of your inventory screen, see how far you have to go for your next level: I'm honestly a little surprised you've gotten this far without leveling a couple of times, if only accidently. eh, he probably skipped most of the stuff in seyda neen, ran to balmora and joined all the guilds without completing any quests yet. he's really not THAT far. also, i dont know if the "poachers" hes thinking they are might actually be the mine OWNERS who are a bit tougher. maybe he's hitting the wrong people.

I do not hit the wrong people (checked their names, they match with the journal description), and yes, i see that i missed some quests in the starting town. I will probably start a new game, since that the rats are the only one quest i have done (except the "hollow trunk" money).
thanks for the help everyone!
