Played W8 when it came out, loved it.
Put it down, came back to it, got bored, put it down.
No coming back to it and feel like a challenge!

Never tried Ironman, so why not.
But what concerns me is a system crash or something could wipe out my game.
Is there a way I can take an occassional backup in case something like that happens?

And so to the party for an ironman game.
I usually go with solos or two chars in RPG games if the game allows it and played through W* solo and with party of 2 and 4.
But for Ironman I think I need to get fully togged up and that means a decent size party.
What do you reckon?
In W8 I found that the simple chars seemed to be best - Fighter with Polearm, or sword, Rogue with twin daggers, and bard with sword, female mook ranger with stamina regen ank things and Giant's sword. I'm wondering if I should go with something more exotic?

On Ironman you can only save when exiting.

People have said here that they have already done expert ironman solos, so it is doable but depends on how much cheese/training you want to use.

If you like simple chars then you could go with a four person party of fighter, rogue, mage and priest. That way you would have all buffs and IMO the fighter and the rogue are the two best meleers in the game. You can get a couple of really nice swords for your fighter and you could also dual wield a sword with diamond eyes. And for the rogue I found that the best soltions are either dual thieves daggers or dual stilettos, depending on whether you want to go for damage or for critical strikes.

I played several games in ironman mode.
Usually 4-5 characters in the party, rarely more. My tires on 3 character parties have failed.

I too think 'simple' profession make a more easy play, at least in bigger parties. My first ironman was fighter, rogue, bard, ranger, prist and mage.

A system crash won't wipe out your game. It's just back to the last point where the game was saved. Thats either the end of the last playing session. Or, if you use autosave (like me), the start or end of the last fight.

You can't save from within the game. But you can make a copy of your save file. I do this to restore if the portal bug occurs (with autosave on, the game saves at the moment the party dies)

It *is* possible to reload out of combat, but i consider that a bug (and don't use it). Point of ironman is that you can't go back and try something else.

Thanks for the ideas.

I dont plan to do anything training or buffing, Ive tried that and while it is part of the game I felt it makes it too sterile and stereotyped, and also can be too easy.

What is the namk of the save file? I want to keep a copy just in case I get a game or windoze problem, not not for "cheating", seems pointless to play on Ironman without the risk, thats the fun of it!

Never play Bishops in RPGs, dunno why, just dont like them.
I think a Fighter, Rogue, Bard and spellcaster would be good, but without buffs a Bishop is real weak for so long. I do like Bards in W8, I also like the Ranger. Maybe I could try with no spellcasters except Bard.

BTW What is the latest patch pls?

Thanks, glad to be back

Latest patch AFAIK is 1.2.4. You can get it from www.wizardry8.com (the official website).

Thanks.

Now, of course< I cant decide on the makeup of my party

Keep dithering.
I'm a fan of the Giants Sword(s) as they are certainties in the game as opposed to random like the exotica. But Mooks are not the greatest of chars.
I am tempted to try Mook Fighter, Mook Rogue, Mook Bard, and Mook Ranger (hate searching), and get an NCP for when the Mook's go walkabout, do you think that would work? I mean, the loss of all the chars.

Regardless of how many Mook are in the party, only one is "taken". So you won't need any NPC's for that.

Thanks for the clarification.

Well, I started.
Ironman on Medium.
3 Mook fighters weilding swords + Human Bard focusing on Music, Artifacts and Locks.
Made mincemeat of crabs on beach and green blobs, then hit two lots of 6 bats and eight rats, all at once on lowest level of monastery!!
Jeez, thats quite a battle at Level 1.
They killed my Bard!

Not sure whether to restart and put that down to an unfortunate battle early on or to continue with dead Bard until I get the ressur powders.

Wot do you reckon?
