Hello,

I am playing Wiz 8 solo for the very first time, so I've been reading about how the game differs from party-based. One of the hints I read was to avoid the Dark Savant in the Swamp because I need to keep Ascension Peak "unlocked" as long as possible.

What does that mean? I never made it to AP in my previous games--is AP only accessible for a time-limited period? I already ran into DS and got the fake orb before reading that advice, am I screwed?

You MUST meet the Savant in the swamp or you can't finish the game; the fake Astral Dominae you get is a critical item.

There is no problem with keeping the Peak open so long as you never go there carrying more than one of the three doodads. If you have two or more with you, the Rapax will block the way behind Bela. If you have none or only one, the way remains clear.

There is also a teleport to the Peak in the Rapax castle, and you can always go early to the Peak and put a portal of your own there.

ERROR NOT TRUE you do NOT need to meet the DS in the Swamp. You can KILL the Mook instead. They play no other part in this game than to provide you with the CM. If you don't have a replacement for it, you only have to kill 6 of them, and the one who opens the door for you. The Don always drops the AD, too, whether or not you've met the DS. Fake AD is NOT critical. I've finished the game now 6 times without it, thinking it was the landslide trigger.

But, what the heck, it's not, so don't fret.

Hmmm. Well, I suppose for the truly bloodthirsty, killing the Mook is an option. It would never occur to me to do that. As it is, there is no big problem with meeting the Savant and getting the fake, which relates to the Moliri and not the real AD. Maybe on your next go-round, you could try the peaceful solution

Well, i have been, now, i found out it was OK 4 games ago. It's just easier not to worry about getting too close to a vent where the DS could fart out.

I used to worry about the vents, too, but I found that carefully approaching them and staying around the edge solved the problem. Also picking up the globe while he was fading out and then backing up quickly helped, as well.

P.S. In addition, going in the daytime where vision is better is a big plus.

it should also be mentioned that the trigger for the landslide is not related to the dark savant in the swamp.

the safest way, i'm told, is to tuck each item away into a "home base" chest as you collect it. then take them one at a time to the peak. i've never tried this, so i dont know if there are other triggers to avoid.

personally, i find hacking my way through the rift at higher levels to be quite relaxing

That's the only one. After I found out about the "two or more doodads" business, I made sure to do the Peak with only one at a time. Worked very nicely. I keep my globes in a locker in the Umpani base, which is a faster load than Arnika.

P.S. Hmm, come to think of it, there was one time when I talked to Braffit (hadn't been to the Peak yet) and he told me the way was blocked. I know I had at least one of the things with me at the time. Don't recall if I had more than one. He never says anything if we aren't carrying any of the three, though.
