I'd just like everyone do a little summerization and contribute their own RP experiences, tips and advice
one thing must point out, each player is different, what is enjoyable for one may not be so for another. everyone here should have an open heart for what others have to say, and try to learn as much as you can (or just read for enjoyment) we have many talented players here it is indeed, for the better playing experiences of all |

Try playing a character with flaws, such as a clumsy dwarf, a mage who messes up his spells now and then, a halfling with an anger control problem or a thief with uncontrollable greed. It adds more depth to your character and makes him/her much more enjoyable to RP.

I agree with Neb, no-one is perfect and a charaacter without flaws is just.. well, unrealistic.
Also, iot may seem a minor thing, but try to leave the other players as much action as you can, they might not like it if in your post you make their character do someything they wouldn't want them to. I have no quibbles about it, but some people possibly do, and remember, the DM is the all- powerful one anyway!

Good point from Talthyr, if for example I threw a dagger at someone else in an RP, for example 250, then I would do it like this: "Neb takes one of this throwing daggers and sends it flying towards 250." instead if writing: "Neb throws a dagger at 250 which pierces his throat and kills him."
Also, if another character makes an open-ended action towards your character, for example: "250 throws a dagger at Neb." then sometimes allow yourself to get hurt, invincible characters are no fun at all. |

quote: lol, nah huh! you can certainly argue with DM! but from my point of view, it is annoying when a player tells you what he thinks will happen next. because the DM set certain stage, items, characters (NPC in this case) and conditions which the players have no knowledge of. say, the DM tells you "there is a room up ahead" you can choose to investigate, but you CANNOT say "I went in, and found a crom faeyr +5 " however there are stituations where you can definitely outsmart (note: this is not the goal of your RP) the DM and provide solutions which he had not thought of (it is always true) and in this case, you can rightfully argue your way as an alternative to the DM-provided solutions there is a balance |

for example
when the dwarf Regin was trapped in the web spell, he killed his nearby attacker (who was similarly held and disarmed) and climbed on top of him at the first chance he had. this was one solution I had not thought of. (I was thinking that the dwarf could fire his axe as a missle to do some damage ) so I didnt tell him "no, you cannot do that because I didnt think of it." it is reasonable, common sense is the first thing. DM is human too, |

As for individual roleplaying, you can provide your character's thoughts and reactions, relate your character to his history.
remember you are not your character. which you understand, may seem harsh for your character to accept. for example, your character's family had been slain by certain (say, renegade dwarves, btw, this background seems to be very popular, lol) so he developes a hatred towards dwarves. eventually, at one point, he might come to realize that not all dwarves are bad. HOWEVER, this process is definitely not an easy one (and certainly he may continue to choose a dwarf-hating life), to you, it may seem very easy to do, but to your character, it is not. so try to be your character and deal with situations as he sees fit |

I feel understanding your characters limitations is important. Being able to let go is important too. When my charecter a relatively weak character is up against dragons and gets attacked he will die. Like my goblin character he specialized in magic which deystroyed his body eventually he became so weak that he died easily.

I got one, dont have Carsomyr from the start and hit a really hard person once to kill them like this : (pretend its the characters firt post so they are only level 7/8) The group came out of the tavern and were confronted by muggers(ok ok i know...) 250 grabbed his two handed sword Carsomyr +5 but was too slow and was hit by one of the enemies, luckily his Full plate armour +3 Armor Of The Hart stopped it with no damage to 250, .....after a while....., 250 finally sliced through the last enemy with no damage whatsoever to himself and walked back over to his friends who were looking at him in surprise and had not moved since the muggers attacked."
Ok maybe its a bit unbeleivable, but it gets the point across...:S |
