Simple. you can't. the single player game is designed for make one and only one PC (you have to fill the rest of the party with NPCs found in the game). only the multiplayer mode supports more than one unique character...you can't change over from one to the other, at least not if you have more than one original character in multiplayer.

First off, make a multiplayer game. You can either choose Serial or TCP/IP connection, then make your characters. Start the game and wait until it Autosaves.
Assuming you installed it in the default folder, go and copy the Autosave folder from the following address, C:\Program Files\Black Isle\BGII - SoA\mpsave Paste into and overwrite the Autosave folder in the following address, C:\Program Files\Black Isle\BGII - SoA\save You can now load it and play as a Singleplayer game. |

Wrong wrong!!! You can and it's easy!!!!
Start a multiplayer game, create/import your characters, start the game, save it after you start. Exit BG. Go to baldurs gate MPSaves and move that saved game to the single player saved games. (make sure it doesn't replace any other saves if you want to keep them Start bg and load up your MP save in single player! EASY

Its quite simple. Start a Multi game. Put in the number of characters you want. Then save the game (manually, not Quick or Auto).
Then go into your HD, open up your BG2 folder and look for the "mpsave" directory. Open that up. There should be a folder with a string of numeric characters before the name you entered for the save. Right-click on it and Copy it. then open up your "save" folder, and Paste the copied folder into that directory. You can now play your multi game in single-player mode. Only hitch is that the special quests, abilities and dialogue will still be centered around your primary PC, and not any others you bring along.

Heh? Simply start a multiplayer game, create your characters and play by yourself!
Its that simple! No file-switching needed. Just run a IP game or some such and play by yourself.

If you convert it to Singleplayer mode, you get less lag and a more user-friendly interface.
