Well, personally, I've not gone for a ranger very often, their special abilities aren't all that special, and if you pick up Minsc you have ranger tank on your hands.
Also, if you do go for a paladin, I'd suggest a cavalier. Immune to fear, bonuses against some of the more really nasty beasts and other benefits. The only disadvantage is no missile weapons, but if you ask me. Put it this way, if you have others who can use missile weapons, and you're a cavalier with Carsomyr, would you want to quickly change to a missile weapon to take enemies out from a distance when you can just hack them into vile, unholy pieces? Hmm, I personally favours the paladin, as a cavalier.
They can learn priest-spells, have very good abilities, and can wield the Carsomyr! I have finished the game as an solo cavalier, without much troubles. But the ranger is also cool. He can have two extra proficiences, have good abilities, and is a good class to play. It's hard to choose between two classes, but just wait till the people sees this post and gives you advices, and then choose the one you like best. see ya! |

I played a ranger in BG, then switched to Cavalier in SoA. It's really a Paladin's game, what with Carsomyr, and your worst enemies are Demons and Dragons, which you are +2 extra against. Hmm, lemme see. If you are a cav, have Carsomyr+6 (you can do this in ToB), and have a dual proficiency in Two handed weapons and two handed sword, you have +12 against demaons and dragons, add the extra +5 for chaotic evil, and you end up +17 against the creeps. Will accept corrections to my math(not my strong suit, being blonde and all).

It's hard not to guess what I am going to say but here goes. Choose the ranger, or more specifically the archer kit for the ranger. They are the most powerful (in my opinion) of the rangers. You get massive missile weapon bonus (+1 bonus to hit and damage for every 3 levels), grandmastery, stealth and have racial enemies. Like the paladin you get rudamentary but sometimes useful low level cleric spells. If you like the backstabing feature of thieves, stalkers can use that to up to x3. That is fun since your character can back him/herself up in a jam if you didn't take out your target on the first blow.
To be objective, of the paladins, I've always like the Unded Hunter. They are immune to level drainand hold, which I hate and they get bonuses fighting undead. It really depends on your style of play. Good luck! |

Well I imported my old ranger to BG2 and choosed archer kit. It's cool to snipe those enemies down before they can even have a chance to melee combat.
Here is my ability scores: STR 19 DEX 19 CONS 18 INT 9 WIS 14 CHA 18 All those have been tomed up in bg1. Btw, where can I find some good Composite Long bow or just Long Bow. And what&where is the best non-metal armor in game?

Ahh, there are many good longbows spread over the game. One of them would be the Mana bow +4. BOW LOCATION SPOILER
* * * This can be found in a cave in the Forest of Tethyr. And the best non-matel armour would be the Shadow Dragon-scale armour. Cromwell forges this for ya, from the Shadow Dragon-scale and 5000gp. see ya! |
