Hi all.
I'm interested to know how people got into RPG's in the first place. First game, fave game kinda thing. My first was a game called Dungeons & Dragons and it was on an old machine called an intellivision, anyone remember them? Used to wind it up, beat it with a stick, swear at it and if all was correctly done it'd buzzz, buzzz, buzz into life (bit like myself in many respects.) The game wasn't strictly an RPG but it kept us amused and began the ball rolling. The year was 1701 as I recall.....a vintage year for...oops, I digress. Following that, and the real RPG benchmark for its day was Dungeon Master followed by D.M 2 Lord of Chaos I think, and then Eye of the Beholder which was possibly the first to have interactive NPC's. I think all of these were on the Amiga and were great games in their own right. What game did you get the first bags under your eyes from, what really started the ball rolling (and rolling and rolling) for you guys? |

During one of my many moves as a kid, I had a neighbor introduce me to the original D&D

I'm truly the one of the oldest RPG games grognard (at the wizen age of 26 now). I played Bards Tale I, Wizardry I, Might & Magic I. I'm proud to say I completed Final Fantasy I, really a great game--better than FF7 I can say. It was easy to tell what series were destined for greatness (sadly Bards Tale is not around anymore).
My first RPG experience however, was playing basic, expert and advanced D & D at age 8, way back in 1982. First edition rules, halflings and elves had different exp tables from fightes, thieves and magic users. I still have the first edition players handbook, I should still have the first basic & expert rules sets, with all that art from Gary Gyax (sp) himself (creator of D&D). Wasn't yet smart enough to understand the rules however, so the DM I played with thought you cut off your own head when you rolled a 1 on a twenty sided die (this was a rule he made up--a precursor to the critical miss), and there were other messed up things like rolling ability scores with a 20 sided die, etc. But we played the game even though we couldn't understand the rules and it was fun--especially those dice. I stopped playing when I got into this religious preteen stage until computer games came along. |

I played Dragon Warrior 1 through as well. Not a bad game (a bit like Ultima 1, so I understand).

Well, it was about 10 years ago. There was this game called Gates to Another World of the Might & Magic series. There's no 3D effects or great graphics but I really love the game plot and those hours I spent travelling around dungeons and forests are the best gaming experience I ever had.Its my 1st RPG and the 1st sensational experience I had ever for any game.

Played D&D in high school club in the late seventys and early eightys. 1st edition. Then thought I grew up and I forgot about it. Read a newspaper article about BG1 in a local newspaper about two years ago and though that it sounded cool. Bought and played "Betrayal in Antara" and loved it. Got so excited that I rushed out and bought BG1 before I even finished Betrayal. Been hooked on Baldurs Gate ever since. My wife thinks I'm crazy cause all I do is play BG2 after she goes to bed. Actually I'm not quite that bad. I do get on this forum from time to time.

My first RPG is actually BGI, since I don't consider Diablo as a RPG. Bought BGI due to countless reviews and recommendation made by friends and co-workers. Being a restless and impatient youth, I used to only play games such as Doom (and the series), Aliens vs Predator, and the Quake series......very stress relieving.
