I just wanted to know whether or not I really need to give a portion of my soul to Sarevok or whether I can get out without him. Also, when I speak to the spirit in the room, it tells me that I can call any of the NPCs to me. Does this do anything or is it just a way to get them in my party? Thanks.

You are going to have to give him either a piece of you soul or Imoen's. To do this, which I recommend, because it causes hilarious dialogue and doesn't hurt her at all, just choose the "Isn't there some other way" option.

Also, the spirit will summon any NPC, and you'll get 2000 XP each. The first time I did it, I summoned them all, but they were too annoying. They make little comments, and it got on my nerves. Just summon people that you are going to need.

How does it effect you when you give him a piece of your own soul? Will you lose any abilities?

I don't think so.
I never took him into my party (still playing my evil guy through Shadows of Amn...~sigh~) but I did heal him when he asked for it, and I don't think I lost any HP or statpoints or anything like that...
I think it's just for roleplaying purposes.

I gave Sarevok a piece of my soul and I took him into my party. I had Minsc. He is a great fighter. I have him with a two handed sword and a crossbow.

If you ask him, Sarevok tells you he only needs a small part of your soul, that it wouldn't harm you and that he would not be a Bhaalspwan reborn but just a regular mortal instead.
So no, you can easily part with it, without any negative effects. For once, he isn't trying to trick you too much

The dialog is better when you have Imoen hand him a piece of her soul, however.
