I never fought him. Can I win with a party of pure spellcasters or is it better to pay ?
Can I open Amit's chest (after I paid the toll) without making them hostile ?

You can kill Amit before you talk to him, and PeeWee stays green.

They tricked my into talking with Amit the first time I played. I assumed it was the Shaman. Grrrr!

I remember the first time I played, although I could afford it, I wasn't happy with the fact he wanted approximately 1/6 of my gold, so I refused. Amit wasn't too hard, Pee Wee I barely survived.

I never had trouble killing Pee Wee. Well, sometimes a character may die, but that no problem in a magic world.

Don't recall if he was afftected by damage spells. But since he attacks you in melee, you could use razor cloak + guardian angel + body of stone.

My last party, the gadgeteer blinded PeeWee just about every round. We would pound away with melee and ranged, then ranged till he ran around a corner and combat ended. Then we would follow till we caught up to him, combat started, and he got blinded. I think he got in maybe 1 stomp the whole fight.

Well, I tackled AP fairly early compared to what everyone else seems to (early around level 20-ish) so a lot of the fights were difficult.
