Trebonius trouble

I accidently told Trebonius that I wanted to challenge him for the post of Arch Mage. However, I want to do his quests. Is there any way to 'reset' him so he doesn't just say "Meet me in the arena"?

Gee, I dunno... the only quest he ever gave me was 'find out what really happened to the dwemmer', and even the sole surviving dwarf doesn't know that... one of the women in the Vivec guild tells you trebonious gave her the 'quest' to inventory every single bottle in all morrowind...

You can actually complete his quest btw. After that he gives you two(?) more quests. I've never done them since one involves killing a whole lot of people I'd rather not kill.
