My son and I are new to W8. He loves it and I stand around looking stupid. We keep meeting enemies much stronger than us and we need to know how to survive? We are in novice mode does this matter? (novice, normal). Any tips on a good area to stay alive in till we train? Please respond if you can help us live another day. Txs

Hi and welcome,

I'll try to give you some hints...
There is a post where all of us posted usefull tips and hints-> it's on page 3 now!

Make sure you have a good mix of power and magic... a bard is very good for a first party, the poets lute puts almost every monster to sleep.

Keep your chars with very low hitpoints in the middle or back.

Try to move against walls, in dooropenings,... so that only one or two monsters can attack you at a time.

Just read those tactical tips and trust me... the first levels are the toughest, it'll get easier.

Enjoy the game,
Psycho

Can you tell us about your party: what classes, and what level they are, and where you are now in the game? Easier to give some tips when we know what you have.

Many gamers do not like to level up (raise a character's level) at all in the early part of the game, even if they have enough experience to do so.

The game generates monsters whose power is based on your party's level of experience.

This makes for easier combat, but you lose some of the appeal of raising level (new spells, stats, etc.)

Also, do not hesitate to restart the game, experimenting with new parties of different types of character classes. Almost every W8 player has done this to fine tune the party to his/her preferences.

Well, most people do take level-ups at the monastery, generally to around level 5. That seems to be the cutoff point. After that, the monsters become more difficult between there and Arnika.

I second the idea of pausing your levelling at level 4 or 5. Then you can make the trip to the next area of the game meeting less formidable monsters en route. Also, for leveling-up in the early portion of the game: you may want to wait until every character in your party can advance to the same level. This means you will truly have a party of six level five characters, rather than a level 5 thief and mage, and a level four samurai, ranger and bishop.

After you get a little more experience, I find that you no longer need to wait since the difference between levels (and the monsters spawned) is not so marked as early on in the game.

Just my observtion. Also, this board has proven invaluable to me when starting (and re-starting) out. Good Luck and have fun.
