PP is only interesting if you don't apply the patch! Or at least until patch 001b.

I played the first game with PP and the last patch. NEVER agin. It's a total wate of time and ressources.

One the other hand without patch PP is a pleasure and you can find excellent stuff. It also help me to find enough trowing items for my Ninja (if she don't use the CoC) because when she throw an average of 6 or more per round it hurt hard in the stock. Only PP can hold me in stocks. Also you can get items you cannot have until later in the game, like quest items, excclent items that are not to sell.

In RL I will never PP and I'm quite different to what I'm in the games. I was first against the PP skill but I finnaly find it a very good and powerfull skill. I would say I go with it.

Give it a try!

I make a point of PP in most CRPG's. I always have either a bard, ninja or rogue who can pp. It's extremely useful early in the game for getting supplies - ammo, potions, low-level armor, etc. and later in the game for getting some really good stuff. Also, Braffit in the temple in Arnika has some really nice stuff - books especially. I save and go for it. Sometimes I quit after 3 or 4 items, and sometimes I keep going till I get in a fight and have to reload.

It's iffy, though. I have a Bard with REALLY high pp skill and I've never gotten some of the good stuff mentioned. For instance, everyone talks about Myles in Arnika having a belt useful to gadgeteers. I've cleaned him out and never seen one.

I've never been able to pp the Shaman or the Don in Trynton for some of the stuff mentioned. I had to kill the Don to get the Cane of Corpus (I waited till after he got my quest item, natch) and I pp'ed the Shaman till there was nothing left and still didn't Diamond Eyes. And my Bard had about 90 pp skill by then. I also wonder if what you get differs depending on who does the pp. For instance, I've never run a Rogue in W8 (been fiddling with Bards and Gadgeteers). Maybe it changes slightly.

I've certainly noticed that random chests change a little with party composition. I found light crossbows EVERYWHERE until I ran a Gadgeteer and wanted to make a triplestrike crossbow, then they weren't around. I don't know if it's accidental or they're really sadists...

PPing is fine in the start of the game, but at later stages there is nothing you really need to PP from characters. I do it occasionally, but I have not gotten anything of great value.

I know this is a hot topic among players, but I can take it or leave it.

Well, as others have pointed out, it's best to pickpocket in an unpatched game, or with one of the early patches (such as the Ascension Peak patch, the only one I've ever used).

But you can't believe that "nothing left to steal" until you've gotten it at least 5-6 times in a row.

I never got Diamond Eyes off the shaman myself, but what I really wanted from him was the Ring of Stars, and stopped when that turned up.

I have gotten an enchanted bow from Burz (really nice so early on), a Faust Halberd (cursed, though) from Antone (lots of retries!), and Raven's Bill (also cursed) from Tramain, among other things.
