If you succeed when trying either of these are there any negative effects?
The merchant doesn't seem to notice so does that mean it wont change attitudes or anything?

if you haven't patched, then they won't notice. the unpatched game is pretty much a free for all with PP and shoplifting.

if you HAVE patched, it's entirely different. they do remember, altho sometimes it takes a while before they get the idea. one morning, out of the blue, they could go aggro on you and call the guards, etc. etc.

there is a pattern when you PP and shoplift. reloading will not change anything like it would before. however, if you pay attention and don't push it past the first warning or two, you will be okay for awhile. you also have to take the time to plan out your steals, sorta make the rounds, leaving time between each visit. also use charm alot on them. just to keep them happy. the occassional gift goes a long way also.

most important, don't start PP or shoplifting until you have put adequate points into the skill. this is one skill you do NOT want to improve thru practice in the beginning, like everything else.

i wasn't happy about how it was going until i had gotten my skill up to 35, and even then, it was iffy.

If you have the 1.2.4 patch then PP & shoplifting work like this.

Shoplifting:
If you successfully shoplift an item/s. Most npc's wont notice until later on in the game. Once they realize that you have been shoplifting form them they will either become:

A) Neutral = meaning they need to be charmed or gien money/item to make them friendly again.

B) Hostile = meaning they will attack you and likely make other npc's on the same factions attack you.

I dont bother shoplifting anyways with my games due to this and the fact that once i get to arnika shoplifting is no use as by then i can make renewal potions which is a great source of income.

Pickpocketing:
Until you get to about 80+ it will mostly be crappy items & gold which IMO it should have been from the start. Pre 1.2.4 patch was way way to easy to not only PP but to totally clean out an npc with virtually no effort besides save-pp-save-re-load (if caught)-pp-save etc.

Now it just takes time/effort to PP with any decent rate. You can pp from about 15skill and up without getting a message of failure every single time but now it works like this.

Trying to pp an npc thats higher level than you with a low skill is likely to end in failure. PP'ing an npc thats same level or lower lessens the failure chance but it also has a limit set to it.

At 15 skill i can normally get 2 tries on Burz, then i need to gain more skill on another npc or gain a level or 2 and put points into skill and then try again. Leveling up isnt necessary Vs. gaining more skill in PP. The higher your pp skill the more you will be able to steal & the better the chance of a more decent item. (decent item by the standard im setting is not in actually a good item just decent compared to the crap you first get with lower skill).

To get diamondeyes off the shaman for example, i've done it with 1.2.4 patch while i was level 17 with 98pp skill.

They way npc's work on pp is that they now have set items in the sense that saving - pp'ing - re-loading - pp'ing will now net you exactly the same items as you pp'd prior to the re-loading. They also set it that how many items you can steal at the point that you try to pp the npc is determined by your current skill.

*For example: 42skill = 6times
78skill = 13times

"note: those figures are just an example are not acurate in any way to the number of times/Vs. skill"

Time in game seems to also affect wether you can pp an npc again or not. PP'ing burz and then comming back several game days later will allow you to try again but same as befoe only a set amount of times.

Im pretty sure this is approx. acurate on how pp now works as this is how i work through pp now with my own characters.

It should also be noted that *SOME* npc's are harder to PP than others. Braffit, Bela & Antone are good examples of the npc's that are *harder* to pickpocket compared to say either Burz, Anna or He'li. The harder npc's are what you might say are "more observant" than Heli or Anna or Burz and have a better rate at detecting someone pickpocketing or shoplifting.

Hope that helps ya in some way.

yeah, thanks a lot. It seems the prepatch version would be much easier but using pp and sl might almost be considered an exploit.
