I'm looking at creating a priest with the intention of changing over to lord (or valkyrie!) after some as yet undecided level, possibly 18 once he gets level 7 spells or maybe somewhat sooner, so he/she will have to be front-line if at all possible.

This seems naturally to call for a Lizzie or Dracon since they start with heaps of VIT and STR to help them survive and do damage in their early/mid levels. If I've done my math right, and assuming I understand the table on page 8, then the Lizzie would start with only 34 INT and the Dracon little better on 45. Their PIE would be 69 and 70 so that looks good and only the Lizzie's 47 DEX is my other concern.

Is this a viable plan? The other characters are likely to be 2 bishops (wiz/pri and alch/psi) or 1 mage and the alch/psi bishop, 2 rangers (or 1 ranger and 1 gadge) and lastly probably a samurai (or rogue if I go 2 rangers).

In comparison a Rawulf would appear to start with 77 PIE, 67 VIT and 57 STR making him not too shabby a fighter.

From my experience, Dracons usually are good for just about any class...

Just keep in mind that you would have 18 (if you want) levels between your starting stats and your resulting stats, so there would be very little difference aside from racial attributes (such as the Dracon's Breath).

True, what I am concerned about is whether or not he would survive long enough to reach level 18, IOW is a Priest capable of occupying the front position and block attacks to ranged fighters and magic users?

maybe, but the bst class to use for a priest is the... DWARF!!!!

why... well, he has great str, great vit, ok dex/speed, and you can turn him into a lord fairly easily.

but the best thing is that your lord wont suffer as much for having the priest multi-classed in terms of survivability (dwarven damage resistance!) and stamina ( as dwarfs have loads).

pluss the dwarf pic with the huge beard is a great combo with Some who is nice and burly, lass. Cause tis wit not strength that win a battle, luckly us we bitty Dwarf's have both!

Grief, I never considered a Dwarf, and they're usually my D&D choice for priests; even the game's manual makes the point they'd make excellent priests.

Hmm, their SPD and DEX are a bit low but I guess not too bad ... thanks Goumindong for pointing out the obvious choice I'd overlooked.

~~kragorn~~

i have a lizzie priestess and i am happy with her. she's got her expert skill already and i am now going to pump her sns and spd, both of which are in the mid to high 60's.

the only drawback is the slower mana regen. i am used to having everybody topped off in about 1/3 of a regular sleep period (2 hours instead of 6). but with her, i have to go the full restime. we get surprised a lot and i don't like that. so, i have to get shadow hound as soon as i am able.

in addition, the Blonde Brigade has a lovely dwarven priestess, and she is a real keeper. i find them both very good at their jobs PLUS they are really fun to play!

i usually keep my priestesses straight buffers, but i also see no harm in having them be able to handle a weapon or two for those awful moments when she's silenced or just plain outta SP.

so on that note, i allowed my dwarven priestess to use a staff and my lizzie goes HtH. i do not put points into it. however, i DO encourage them, from the first, to do a round or two that way in each battle. esp if its a decent foe, and they have been very softened up by the others, i let everyone else defend her, and she finishes the fight.
