For the last 9 levels I have been putting everything into fire and water for my mage, but I haven't been getting very many spells (3 for fire, 2 for water). My question is, would it be better to take up another school and start dumping points into it, or stick with these two and wait until higher levels?

Yes, I searched. I didn't find anything that could help me.

Thanks.

I hope you've been also putting 3 points in Wizardry each level up. Putting points in Fire and Water helps with number of spell points, but you need Wizardry for the skill to learn the spells in the first place.

Also, on the other stats, Intelligence is of course important for a wizard, but don't forget Piety. That can also help when it comes to learning spells.

Hope this helps,

Well, yeah, of course I've been putting the max into Wizardry. I was just wondering if it would be worth it to stick with Fire and Water, or take another school now because having so few spells really hampers the versatility of the mage.

oh, definitely!! put all your points into all the spell schools at every level up.
that's one of the two best things you can possibly do. the other is cast, cast, cast.

the realms are the mage's weapons and you want them powerful asap. all the other skills will go up just by playing the game.

~~ observe your meditation hour ~~

* before every rest period, save your game (dunno, its a habit)
* cast all non-combat spells on the highest bubble, even if you fizzle, you will usually gain experience.
* do this with each spell religiously, and you will almost instantly see your realms grow!
* buy or pickpocket (exp for your bard/rogue!) one non-combat spell in every realm that has one and add it to the routine.

so that's how you can spend 5 minutes a day raising your skills at bedtime. ~~ the meditation hour ~~

do it with your priestess and other part time spellcasters also.

IMO, teh Wizard/Divine has some very nice early spells. Enchanted blade is good, and those magic missiles work on several enemies at a time (cone). It would be worth a few points at this time and both are spells available only to a mage.

Do you have any other spellcasters? If not, you'll want some points in Air for the future Portal spell. And Missile Shield (level 2) is nice to have against those poison spitting monsters.

From what I understand, it's okay to spread the points around just a bit. Even a few points in the other realms will open up some spells (Web in Earth, for example) that you can then raise stats through practice.

Good luck!

Personally, I focus on Fire, and spread the other points around. I want to be semi-competent at each of the realms, but definittely a Fire specialist.

hm, now what's the topic already...
I too started with dumping all points into fire and water. but by the time my fire skill was up to 60+ it was obvious to me fire's a waste of skill points after a skill of 30 (that gives you fireball, which is actually useful in the first parts of the game). the only spells you get after fireball are firestorm and nuclear blast, which are totally useless; by the time you're able to cast them everything you meet has at least 80% resistance to fire so damage spells are a complete waste.
so for a mage I'd recommend distributing points evenly between water, air and earth. earth may seem like a waste, but once you start running into high level spellcasters you begin to appreciate the elemental shield...

Something to remember. The resistance number is just an indication of what spells are most effective against a monster. I regularly cast spells against monsters with 80 or better resistance and they do have an effect. The power level you cast the spell at as well as your Power Cast ability make your spells more effective. Now if a monster has over 100 in a resistance I generally do not waste my time casting spells from that realm against it.

~~masked frog~~

that's very true! and good advice, to boot.

one thing i noticed, and it would be great if someone could verify this, is that with firestorm, it seems that damage done at the end of the round is never resisted. of course, i am only basing this on the number of point dmg each baddie takes and the fact that they make the most gosh-awful sounds, as tho they are being tortured.

a PowerLevel 4 cast on a group of 6 higardi will cause 22 to 28 points dmg, per baddie, per round. i don't know how it increases, but it seems that when i can do a PL 7 cast, it could be almost 100 per person per round.

i LIKE those numbers. or am i all wet? ::totally positive someone will delight in showing her just how incredibly wet she is::

sure, spells have an effect even against monsters with > 100 resistance, but casting damage spells at anything with above 70 resistance is a waste of spell points imo. I mean, casting a PL 7 nuclear blast at a group of Rapax will do about 30-40 damage. sure, there may be 20+ of them around you so that adds up to 600+ damage, but it's still a waste! 30-40 damage is easily compensated by the 'overkill' factor - you know, when your fighter wielding the Excalibur hits for 130 hp at an enemy with 50 HP left, or your ranger/ninja/samurai/monk scoring a critical hit. or even most importantly, after killing a nearby enemy some of your characters that would be in line for a swing have to waste it waiting for another enemy to come in range.

this is my take - anything that can be seriusly hurt by area-of-effect spells in the second half of the game isn't dangerous enough to worry about. so why waste the spell points?
