All I have to say is wow. I sat down to play last night, figuring I would head back to the monestary to finish it off. Of course I was expecting a fight or two on the way there but nothing like what I saw. I ended up staying in one spot pretty much the entire time and frankly I'm surprised I actually survived.....I also know what some people are complaining about (I kinda like it). It was actually only 5 fights all together but man were they tough. The first group was the fighters (don't remember their names) with around 80-90 hit points. A total of 9 of these tough guys were seen in the distance and I thought for sure my party's death was imminent. Thankfully I remembered the comments about using the landscape to your advantage or I wouldn't have lasted 3 rounds.
As usual I camped after the fight then saved. Took a few steps forward only to come across 9 killer bats with an average of 40 hit point. I was thinking this would be a fairly easy fight but was proven wrong immediately. These guys can do some damage and also have a special attack. Once again I proved victorious...... camped and went for a little walk. Next in line were more bats and tons of swaying plants (actually scared the crap out of me there were so many monsters). I got lucky this fight as the bats were less powerfull than before and the plants weren't too bad. Camp, walk a bit, another fight. More fighters.....with damn near 90 hit points. 5 of them with 2 real weak guys straggling along for the spoils. Camp, walk... last big fight. 14 swaying plants (I know, my memory is horrible) headed towards me. I move back into my spot so only one or two monster can get at me at once. I was pretty smug at this point as I survived all those other fights without losing anyone. I kept waiting for the plants to come to me but they ended up stopping a fair distance and started shoot spikes or whatever at me. At first I didn't think much about that so I just fired arrows at the things. That is of course until I first became poisoned. And since they were all in one big lineup fireball was kinda useless so a new strategy was in order. Thankfully you can web and paralyze these things or my party would have been worm food. Needless to say I barely squeaked through this epic battle..... still in the same spot I started from 2 hours (real time) earlier. All I have to say is that I love this game Just happy though that this didn't happen when I left the monestary or I would never have made it. |

Arnika Road is a very rough area. Sometimes the RNG just has it in for you. To balance things more in your favor, you may wish to jump the level down to "Novice" while in this area. (You can bump it up again later on.) Also...don't sleep a full 8 hours. Just nap enough to have your characters regain their stamina and some mana and then hit ESC...there's less of a likelihood for new monsters to spawn in a shorter length of time.
If all else fails, turn to Continuous Mode combat and run like he**! (Hold Shift down while walking -> run!) -Sazerac |

I for one can attest to the fact that Arnika Road is tough. I thought I was going to get back to the monastery fast and boy, was I surprised. Yes, it was quite tough and I even put it on novice. As for running in continuous combat mode, you still have to wait for the round to be over before you can run. At least, that's what I've discovered.

Moni, sure it might be a little frustrating at times when you want to get somewhere but who can argue with all that experience Plus it gets pretty boring when things are too easy.
I guess thats one of the reasons I've always like the Wiz series....they never made it too easy on you. |

Ahh...
Finally people who appreciate the chanllenge of getting from point A to point B. My first party had a big problem going to Arnika. I got into a fight with 5 Highwaymen (80 HP) and then got jumped from another direction by 5 more. I ran like the devil and after a few rounds they gave up. BTW I did this in the normal combat mode. At this point I thought I was safe but some killer plants appeared and I had to duck into one of the crevaces that was far enough from the road that they could not see me. The eventually wandered by and I got to Arnika. You have to love a game that provides fights where you should run away. As a point of help do not camp unless you absolutely have to. Camping causes the monsters to respawn. It is better to try to get where you are going or at least to the next hiding spot up the road to minimize the number of respawns. Hope this helps. |
