First off, I'm not sure this is even possible.

Secondly, I'm not even sure I can explain it well enough to get my point across.

Bearing those things in mind, here we go...

I'm playing through and trying to solo the game with an Assassin currently. When I made the character, I used Female Voice X (dont recall which). My question is this: Is there any way to remove just 1 'file' from that voice makeup, and replace it with another from a different voice makeup?"

To go into the best detail I can: I like all of the voice files on the one I picked up - save one. When I use hide in shadows (which as you can imagine with an assassin is like...... a lot), I don't like the voice snipet it plays. It says: "I have hidden myself well." Not bad, just not good.

I -do- however love Imoens hide in shadows voice snipet, which is: "Now you see me, now you don't." Much better.

So what I'm driving at is: can I remove just that one hide in shadows file snipet from my overall voice makeup on my character, and replace it with Imoens single hide in shadows voice snipet? The two voice pitches are very similiar (rather, Imoens voice and the voice I picked sound enough alike that it wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb), so it would blend in well with the others in the overall scheme of things if it's possible.

Lordy Lordy I hope that made sense, and I hope it's possible.

A peculiar thing perhaps, but it would just make me happier with my character - which is a sentiment I'm sure some of you diehards can understand.

My thanks for your thoughts and advice,
Cecil

OK, first up we need to aquire the tools for the job.

Head over to www.teambg.com, and you need a program capable of extracting files from the .bif files. For most purposes id recommend the Infinity Engine Explorer, but that programs one flaw is that it wont recognize files it cant handle itself, including sounds.

SO we need the generaly inferior WinBiff program. Get that running, and load the the chitin.key file from your bg2 directory.

We may also need a program that can play the WAVC type files used by this version of the infinity engine. They have the same .wav extension as the previous versions, but they have compression in them. SO we cant play them with standard programs. I havent checked out the sound programs, but teambg will have something.

in Winbiff, find the CHAsound.bif file, in there you will find all of the characters lines. Assuming that the naming conventions hold, sinply extract the appropriate file and put it in your bg2/sounds directory, rename it to female1xx.wav and your sorted. If you wind up with the wrong file, youll either need some trial and error or a program to play the wavs.

Egads! My head swam even trying to comprehend all of that.

Blast my computer savvy short comings. I was hoping (in vain I was sure) that it would be simply some cut/paste trickery involved.

Looks as if I'll really have to get my thinkers cap on to pull that off!

Just in case I bomb terribly, or scare myself out of trying, here's another question: is it possible to create a character and use Imoens voice file? When you create a toon, it only presents you with the options of FEMALE X, X and X, and MALE X, X and X (etc) for the voice. So is it possible to get Imoens voice file over into that list so you could have her voice on a created character?

And thank you, andrewas.

It is simply a case of cut&paste, the problem is that imoens voice files are stored inside a larger file, CHAsound.bif. Since windows cant handle these, you need an explorer program alled WinBiff.

Now there ar more than one hundred imoen voice files so finding the right one will be a pain, especialy given that windows cant handle them itself either. However, teambg will have a utility that can play these. Everyone here is asleep so I cant go playing them all just now, but I could email out the file sometime tomorrow, it should be less than 10K so its not a problem.

On creating a character with imoens voice - youd need to extract all 37 files from the 150 odd total that she has, and get them all in the right order. Itd be a job for a rainy day, and its sheduled to be sunny for the weekend at least.

Hope that makes it a bit clearer.

Or you could go to a site like
http://www.sorcerers.net/

and download the whole soundset of the NPC's in the game....
Which is mucho simpler

Sorry andrewas, i'm not trying to undermine you in anyway, just it might be a little easier for cecil here that's all.

Bristowe is correct, but it is an 18.8 Mb download from sorcerors.net. Unfortunatly teambg.com seems not to have a util capable of playing these files, leaving me to write my own. I think they use zlib compression, so it shoudnt take too long.

However my regular ISP seem to be dead so im paying per minute here, so ill get back online later.

Well, that was a pain in the arse. Problem is that bioware dont like people accessing their audio/visual file formats, so any site carrying a converter seems to either die or move. But i eventualy found one.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, the file you want is imoen47.wav. To make it easier im about to mail it over to you. Grab it from your hotmail and name it over the existing file, which is female25.wav. Make a backup of it in case you dont like the new version.

Yeah, you had the wrong WinBiff. The one you want is from www.teambg.com and has nothing at all to do with email. Never heard of the other one. Weird.

Anyway, it wasnt any trouble doing this - its raining out and theres nothing better to do. And it only took about 1/2 hour, mostly finding a live link to wavc.exe. If you need anything else feel free, ive just re-finshed PS:T and am bored till I get IWD.
