Im dying to read something about this Drizzt character that seems to turns up in all bg games. (i haven´t played TOB yet but i´ll bet he and Elminister will be there too) So im gonna buy the dark elf trilogy: Homeland.
Is this the right book and is it any good? I posted a topic about this earlier but it seems to have dissapeared wenn Ziroc moved all the data so please comment again. ------------------ ![]() Those who watch their backs meet death from the front- Dreamer128 paladin of the order of the holy flame. |

All in all its quite an entertaining novel despite the drawbacks I have about Salvatore and Drizzt. Ill start with the Pros.
First the fight scenes are very well done and described. The action is some of the finest you will find in the genre and it really brings things to life, very vivid. The next good point is it has loads on Drow society and Politics which is hugely interesting and a lot more fascinating than say the typical surface king and queen normal arangment. The cons and I know some will disagree with me and start screaming you blasphemer and so forth but here goes. I dont like Drizzt himself much, hes a very one dimensional charecter because he is so very very painfully good. He never ever does anything bad that would add depth to the charecter, has no faults, no problems, he never changes throughout the books. An over good charecter is painfull but someone who never develops and is always so lily white annoys people because there is no perfect person like this so no one reading can relate to him. To conclude being presented with a physcological marble statue pisses me off to be quite frank about it. The next is Slavatore style of writing (shock horror from the drizzt lovers). I think his style of writing is too forceful let me explain by example. The adjective WICKED turns up a lot describing something in the drow world, forceful adjectives like this turn up a lot this forces a negative viewpoint on you. I believe a good writer should be able to present you with the picure and let you make up your own mind on what you think while never being in any doubt as what your going to think because he has written the scene in a way which gives you the viewpoint he wants but does it subtly enough so that you dont know it. In effect when you decide on how you feel about the image or scene you feel stronger about it because it is your decision. Salvatore cant do this, he forces what he thinks on you, while not criminal and ruining the book it takes away from it. Still a good book though. ------------------ ![]() |

I have to agree with jabidas a bit, but these are still very good books.
The following books are available on Drizzt: Homeland Exile Sojourn Ice Wind Dale Streams of Silver The Halfling's Gem Legacy Starless Night ...urm, there's more but I can't remember them. I'll have a look in my collection tonight. Also, the following are available by Elaine Cunningham, based on another Drow character: Daughter of the Drow Tangled Webs ------------------ Hey! if you are interested in the drow elf society and/or Drizzt's history - it's the books for you. Great description of the society, fighting style, and development. Action, Adventure, Betrayal, Terror! S&M!(eerrr... *ahem*)
if you finish 'Homeland,' I would go with the following: 'Exile' and 'Sorjourn'(sp?). THEN get started with R.A. Salvatore's 'Icewind Dale' trilogy... ![]() |
