by Piers Anthony. Unlike a lot of his stuff this series is definitely NOT funny - but VERY good all the same. It is a pretty old series, now, but I would recommend it to anyone who likes to see characters develop and enjoys good action as well.
It's about a rather nice kid, who, due to circumstances becomes - er - someone rather less nice, lol! But you are with him all the way and understand him...

Just corrected the author. Thanks, RudeDawg!

I remember that series...

but it was written by Piers Anthony, the first one came out in '83.
it was very good, but i was kind of young when I read it, and was a bit disturbed by the "adult" nature of some of the scenes in the book.

It does show how circumstances can change people. This child loses his innocence, and becomes determined to grow to power to avenge his family. Things, and his outlook, change.

The series is five books long. It is out of print, but should be easy to find in used-book stores...

*WARNING* there is definitely adult situations in the series...

Ooops! Was it Piers Anthony? Sorry! He is another writer I always read.
Yep, just checked...
Why did I think it was Harry Harrison? Senility, I expect!

Actually, their humor is very similar...

I found myself looking for Xanth near the Staniless Steel Rat stuff on more than one occasion...

Only thing missing is a 6th book in which Spirit takes the tale to it's conclusion
