by Piers Anthony. Unlike a lot of his stuff this series is definitely NOT funny - but VERY good all the same. It is a pretty old series, now, but I would recommend it to anyone who likes to see characters develop and enjoys good action as well.

I remember that series...
but it was written by Piers Anthony, the first one came out in '83. it was very good, but i was kind of young when I read it, and was a bit disturbed by the "adult" nature of some of the scenes in the book. It does show how circumstances can change people. This child loses his innocence, and becomes determined to grow to power to avenge his family. Things, and his outlook, change. The series is five books long. Actually, their humor is very similar...
