I've noticed that this particular post was inteded for the fantasy novels which I've thankfully avoided all these years(Sure Wies and Hickman are ok, but there are such better books to read, honestly!) . What about the new rules? What about the old rules? What about the game itself? Whats the world without the game? Where is the most appropriate spot to post on stuff like that? Oh, and I meant no disrespect about the AD&D novels being shallow, tiresome, unimaginative tomes of garbage that would better suit the flames in my fireplace...really, they're...uh...great.

If anyone wants suggestions on books OTHER than D&D settings written by contracted authors, feel free to respond!

Cheers.

Storm King, usually I try not to feed trolls but I'll make an exception here. Admittedly most of the the published stories do not compare to works from authors such as, Jordan, Feist, Lackey, Kurtz, Modesitt or even Williams, they are for the most part decent reading. The Forgotten Realms series has even produced one of todays best fantasy authors, Robert Salvatore. They are also a great source for information about Toril, Krynn, Greyhawk or the other settings. As this is a forum for discussion of AD&D Books, most folks are here to talk about the novels (and yes I know manuals and rulebooks are books too). What is the world without the game you ask? In the case of these series, they have a life of thier own and more folks that read the books do not play the game. Talk to the webmaster Ziroc, and see if he(?) will start a new forum for general discussion of the game.

Geeze, poke a lil' fun at you D&D fantasy nuts and get the short end of the lecture stick...I say, sure fantasy books are a blast, but if you can live 'em, why read 'em? Oh, and it didn't seem much of a problem for Yanor to post about the rulebooks, I noticed his post after I introduced this topic. I guess I'm looking for some info on the subject. If you know of any other rule posts that are particularly popular, I'd be interested to hear of them.

cheers.

Also try to get hold of anything by David Gemmel (Drenai Series, Druss novels etc), Stephen Lawhead (Dragon King Trilogy, the Pendragon cycle, and various others),Peter Moorwood (Viking Samurai society with spring loaded pistols (15ft effective range though)nice author, illustrated his own work), J.R.R.Tolkien (you must have heard of him), Sheri.S.Tepper (The True Game Trilogy is all I've ever found),Robert.E.Howard(Conan stories), Ursula Le Guin (Wizard of Earthsea Trilogy, The Left Hand of Darkness etc) and the bloke who wrote the "Fahrd and the Grey Mouser" stories.
These are all great reading.

In defense of BriteHawk, only an illiterate 10 year old would make such a comment:
"sure fantasy books are a blast, but if you can live 'em, why read 'em?".
Was your older sister typing those words for you??
Shame on you...

Another thing. Did you even know that David Cook (a damn good author), also was the designer/developer of the AD&D second edition rules?? He could not have done it without the ability to tell a good story. The games and the books cannot be separated. Anyone who wants a good game should read the novels. That is where you find the answers to your "why" or "how" questions. If you cut yourself off, and live up to that stupid comment you said earlier, you lose a large reference guide.

Was he one of those sad powergamers who re wrote Unearthed Arcanna as the Skills and Powers trash. That stuff totally destroyed any semblance of play balance (we even pointed out to a minotaur that you can't multi class as a Cleric Fighter Shaman Witchdoctor Ranger because you can't multi class Fighter and Ranger together just to up the average hit points of the others).
If he wasn't one of that crew then I salute him as a most respectable man.
