Spells

The mage in my party has got to level 7 and can memorize two level four spells, only I can't find any level four spells to write to her book. I've just bought a couple from Ulgoth's Beard but is there anywhere else I can find some spells?

yes, you can find them all over. Sorcerors Sundries in Baldur's Gate has them, along with many other shops. You can also find them in all of the 3 quests that are found in Ulgoths Beard, but I won't spoil you on that. Also you can find them in certain other locations, Im sure you'l find plenty as time progresses.

You'll find some level 5 spell as well in the Sorcerous Sundries, so it's a good idea to buy them.

Oh well, we've done alright so far and I managed to get through Icewind Dale without any mage.

I don't really think there are any "essential" spells in bg1 really. You can get by without a mage, so how can a spell be necessary? Also you can find loads of wands and protection scrolls, which pretty much cover everything you'l need, so any of the mages are good, they just have their different +'s and -'s. If you want a really good mage your gona be forced to have your main character be one, so that you have access to all spells.

Ross...you're right, you don't need a mage to get by in bg1. However, it can get pretty annoying having a mage in your group die since they have such few HP in bg1. Mirror Image helps out a lot with this problem.
