there are spider webs or traps that keep popping out almost as soon as you enter the area.... i tried looking at other postings on this topic as im sure there have been but didnt find what im looking for..
when im in this area, ive tried , detecting traps with imoen and even the find traps spell with Branwen but nothing seems to work and i and my whole party still seems to get hopelessly trapped...
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

let Imoen drink a bottle of potion of perception might help.

but the key thing is be patient!
move the party (Imoen and Branwen upfront)slowly at all times...traps are not immediately detected once you let the thief in detect trap mode or the cleric casts find trap spell...it takes time.

You'll see Branwen gesture every time she attempts to detect traps with the spell. When that happens, move both her and Imoen forward just enough to reveal some of the fog of war, but never enough so that they move to a location they could not see before.

What I do is put Imoen on detecting traps after drinking 1 or 2 potions of perception and then have someone cast haste and then invisibility on her so that she can detect traps and not be seen at once. If a trap is detected, then I'll have her disarm it and run back to the party (which is standing near Tiber), where I'll recast haste (or potions, whichever one I have) and invisibility on her until I have a clear path to the Spider's Nest. Potions of Freedom last for a good 10 turns, so having some of them at hand will just be a plus.

What I find handy is to have two Thieves. In BG1, there are no Thieves that can master all the skills you're going to need (except Alora, but who the hell wants her), so it makes a lot of sense to split the Thieving among two people. The combination of Imoen and Coran has always suited me to perfection: He's the Backstabbing Fighter/Thief who concentrates on Stealth and Pockets, she's the maternal Thief->Mage who maxed out on Traps and Locks before she Dualed. Put 'em together and you've got Coran invisibly scouting just a head of Imoen, who removes all the Traps for the benefit of the party.

Note: Since nobody in this thread has mentioned that you need to invest Thieving skill points into Detect Traps for it to be useful, I should probably do so myself.

I don't often use Imoen for backstabbing creatures. Sometimes I do it, but I don't like to use her for it since she's not a good fighter. I've had some success with her in fighting with the Short Sword of Backstabbing and Varscona, but I like to just keep her on ranged fighting (short bow). She's more of a detect/remove traps and open locks person for me, with a decent amount of points in HiS so that 1 potion will usually do the trick.

thanks to everyone for the tips. i successfully detected and disarmed traps with imoen....the trick is to keep her at the start of the party in a round party style formation
