Currently I'm in the last part of Chapter 2, in Luskan. And I encounter a lot of Wererats, ghouls, you name it... I'm wondering however how experience is calculated for defeating them. At the moment, I get a whopping 3 (!) experience points for killing a Wererat or a Ghoul, that's less than I got for killing, well, just about anything else in the game. Anyone knows what's causing this, and am I the only one encountering this problem? I mean, I did almost every sidequest possible so far so I'm already of a rather high level; it's not strange to think that the game is doing the lower XP thingy on purpose to make sure I'm not of a too high level by the time I reach Chapter 3... But only 3 (!) Experience points? That's, well, not that much.

I hadn't noticed anything as low as 3 xp, but I do know that they award something like 10% of the normal xp for the official module. But think about it-- I was level 20 at the end. The story represented something like 2 months time in the game world. Sure, some people learn fast, but to go from being someone who barely knows what a sword IS to being a legendary swordmaster in 8 weeks is a bit much.
I always thought that was silly even in pnp. A mage, for example, should study for decades to get great power (usually the case with NPCs), but a PC can go from magically inept to Grand Archmage in about 1 year game time. ![]()

Well, it seems to me that you gain experience on the fact how difficult you have it in the game. You can easely see this for yourself. Start a new game and do the prelude module. The first few weak goblins, you have to fight by yourself and you gain 20 exp. for every one killed. After you get Pavel as your temporary merc. you only gain about 13 exp. for each one killed. So the game probably takes into acount what level you are and if you have a henchmen or not. The second time i noticed it was when i was fighting escaped prisoners and was granted 11 exp. After Tomi died, i got 17. And when i got Tomi back and had leveled up i only got 4.

Yup... But I've now reached a point that I get about 300 experience points for killing a Lich (!). There's certainly some logic behind all of this, but gaining only a few points of XP when you already have 90,000 doesn't really help much. Oh well, I will admit there's logic behind the system, it just struck me as a bit weird.

Experiance in 3rd Ed rules is done by difficulty by party level. In other words at first level you would have to expend some resourses to defeat a level one monster, resources being magic, potions, and hit points. An equal level challenge requires some usage. An easier challenge requires less resources so garners less of a reward. For example a 20th lvl fighter would not even be slowed in stopping a basic orc.
