I named my Siamese Fighting Fish after Xan. BG names are great.

Anyone else have pets named after BG characters.

A siamese fighting fish will live close to a decade if you take proper care of them. I used to breed them.

Xan, on the other hand... Yeah. He don't live long.

Anybody that thinks Xan is weak is goofy in the head. It is quite possible to turn Xan the whiney mage into a Tonka Truck Tuff Tank.

On subject, I have a black Teddy Bear hampster named Peekaboo. Often called Boo for short.

Goofy in the head, huh. Xan is nearly useless. The only thing that makes him palatble is the moonblade - at least he is different. A player of bg1 can produce a better mage through character creation.

I only used him once. He died, permanently, about 3 seconds after emerging from the cave from Mulahey's lair into the deserts. So, I can't say I've given the fellow a fair shake. Maybe if he'd been given a Moonsling, so he wouldn't charge forward like a scrawny Minsc and attempt to poke the guy in plate mail...

Maybe next time I run through, I'll try him again, and determine exactly which of us is goofy in the head.

One Moonblade is not enough to turn a pure Wizard into a Tank--but trust me, once you've given him all the kickass Mage gear (which you were going to get anyway), Xan actually is worth putting into a melee. As long as you make sure your Tank gets in there first, Xan will actually carve his initials into the flanks of a fair number of Gnolls (or whatever).

You're right, Xan has lousy CON and pathetic hitpoints. So just make sure he doesn't get hit. Xan has 16 DEX, whereas Edwin has 10, Dynaheir has 13, and Xzar can't cast Mirror Image.

I have had Xan stand toe to toe with a certain somebody in the end of the game that wears black spikey armor... Minsc was getting pounded on badly, Xan stepped in and took the dance, keeping Mr Black and Spikey distracted for a bit, even managed to score a good hit on him, until Yeslick could get Minsc back into fighting shape. Xan, I should mention, took no damage from this, and walked away with 2 of his mirror images still intact, and his Ghost Armor still functioning.

Xan is the best defensive mage in the game, bar none. Offensively, he might come up lacking at times, but, defensively, you can't get a better mage.

Fish are cool. As is Xan. Why isn't he in BG2? Does he die?
Graet shame

Nope, he is in the BG2 tutorial to provide you with mage training.
