Has anybody figured out what the 2 small sand piles (one in front of Shrine and the other at the beginning of the Pyramid) are for?

What about the various urns and things you can find? I generally don't pay attention to them, but I'm always wondering if I'm missing something...
As well, there's that different-colored block near the Guardian statue in the Pyramid (near the black fire). Anyone found a way to get in there?
