How many notches can a fighter get in BG1? (In one weapon proficiency, I mean.)

Can you get 5 if you use one of the XP cap removers?

And if you are going to answer: "It depends on which XP cap remover you install"

Then which XP cap remover is the 'best', considering correct behaviour above the XP cap (ie. extra notches, extra magic missiles, extra damage on fire ball etc, extra HP, extra backstap multiplier, lvl. 5 spells, extra memorized spells, etc)

Can fighters go all the way up in bows and cross bows
rangers should be able to because: (range)ers it would just be cool if they were bowmen but in BG2 they can but with a pretty big penalty to bad

Single and dual class fighters are able to 'go all the way up in bows and cross bows' (and any other weapon).

Rangers (and paladins) cannot because eventhough they are of warrior class (same base class as the fighter) they have not fully dedicated their life to fight with their weapon(s) of choice.

Rangers use lot of their time to 'nurse' the woods and the wilderness, while the paladin uses most of his time to praise the god(s).

The fighter does not care about nature or the gods more than any other people in the world, which leaves him/her plenty of time to practice with his/her weapon.

In game terms it would make the ranger too good compared to the fighter, if the ranger could be just as good with a bow as the fighter can be.

Five stars comes up at 250K XP if I recall, but the other important question is what to put those stars into.

I vote for Axe - best all round weapon for a Tank.

Uh.....for the last 10% of the game, sure. But for the entire first 4/5ths of the game, you're stuck with nothing but a lame Battle Axe+1, or if you go to Durlag's Tower you can get Bala's Axe, which has a cool description but doesn't actually do anything...except act as a regular Axe+1.

Hmmm - are those the thoughts of a power gamer?

Some might think that axes are cool. If your tank is a dwarf you simply MUST wield an axe. If your tank is an elf, you would look ridiculous with one. You could easily complete the game with your tank wearing an axe +1.

BTW: It is sad why the long blades always are in majority, when it comes to good magic. In the DMG of AD&D 2nd edition you can see why, if you lock up the tables for magic weapons.

Dwarves aren't sterotypically bonded with the Axe and Axe alone--they like Warhammers just as well. (Tangent: Elves get bonuses with Long Bows and Long Swords, and Halflings get bonuses with Slings, so why in Faerun don't Dwarves get bonuses with Axes and Warhammers?)

Techincally, yes, any advice to stay the hell away from Axes in BG1 would be powergaming advice. But when you're low-level, that single point of difference in THAC0 can make the game a hell of a lot more fun. Even a Dwarf with 3 points in Axe would quickly use some other weapon if he didn't find any decent enchanted Axes. Blame BioWare, not me--I'm not the one who put the only 2 good Axes in Chapters 5 & 6, respectively.
