I am not sure what you mean. Upon creating the mage when you say accept it should give you the option of memorizing a 1 or 2 spells after pressing the accept button. After that you need to find, or buy scrolls to write then to your book of spells that you can memorize.

It depends on what you want. If you go with a straight mage you can learn any spell but you don't get the extra spell to memorize. I liked being an Illusionist. However I don't think you will be able to learn the following spells: Chill Touch, Larlock's Minor Drain, Ghoul Touch, Horror, Skull Trap,
Vampiric Touch, or Animate Dead Horror, and skull trap are useful spells for a mage. I am sure other people have their favorite mages. My worst pick would be an Enchanter. You will not be able to learn the following: Chromic Orb, Magic Missile, Shield, Agannazar's Scorcher, Stink Cloud, Web, Fireball, or Lightning Bolt [ 11-19-2002, 01:44 PM: Message edited by: pritchke ] |

As you go up levels you will eventually be able to memorize more, and they become more powerful. There is also a hidden gem early on after you leave Candlekeep called the Ring of Wizardry with doubles your first level spells. It is hidden so you may want to search the post for its location or ask where to find it.

Hi Silex. One of the great people here, Six of Spades, has written a good guide on Baldurs Gate, titled "Volothamp's Comeuppance". It may help you out. I liked it. Check out his site at:

Dang it, I was trying to be modest!
![]() Silex, yes, my site is good and can be a massive source of useful information for you, but trying to understand Mages and the system of Wizard magic, when you're just starting out, can be incredibly frustrating. So, if you're a true virgin newbie, here's the Cliff's Notes on Wizards: 1) God, do they suck when starting out. 2) I find that it's better to play the 1st half of BG1 without a Mage. 3) Sweet Mother of Mercy do they kick ass at high levels (I'm talking BG2 here). If you're not a true virgin newbie, you should understand most of the stuff that Volothamp's Comeuppance has to say about Wizards and their spells. Even so, I think you're better off beating the game (or getting at least half of the way though it) as a Warrior or Thief before you attempt a Mage.
