So they were cruising along, a party of four, trying to set a new speed record to Brimloch Roon.
They swept the mantraps aside, entered Shurugeon Castle, and literally ran through the crumbling walls reducing hordes of skeletons and undead ronin to piles of dust. "Hey, this is fun!" "Gregor, you just like showing off your new Dispel Undead spell." "Well, it's pretty nifty, don't you think?" Bill and Horace shook their heads in despair. Gregor had never picked up current idioms. In no time they had traded blows with Haleabus and watched with macabre glee as the Masque's tentacles slurped him up. Liz, the ninja, impatiently hopped from one foot to the other while Bill spoke with D'Soto then she dashed into the treasure room to get the Shroud. "Let's go - Dragon's Spire, next stop!" After a few breathless strokes in the river and multiple fire spells in the direction of various fuming fungi they entered Erathsmedor's lair. They paced back and forth while Kol made fun of a twenty-ton fire-breathing flying lizard and then chortled when he became snack food. Their moment had arrived. Liz reached confidently into her pack. A moment passed. Another moment passed. "Uh, guys?" "Yes, Liz, what is it? The clock's ticking you know," said Bill. "Did I give any of you the shroud?" Three heads swung sharply in her direction and six eyes narrowed ominously. "Well, it's not here." Horace rubbed his lower lip and said, "Come to think of it I don't remember seeing it. Bill? Gregor?" Frantic rummaging among the party's packs revealed that the shroud was not there. Liz sidled behind Erathsmedor's great bulk trying to be quiet but she inadvertently kicked some gold coins and they rolled across the cavern floor. Six eyes narrowed even further. Gregor said, "Liz, can you offer some explanation for our, um, shroudlessness?" Liz mumbled something indistinct. Bill said, "I didn't quite catch that, Liz." His voice dropped dangerously as he spoke her name. "I said that, well, I think I, um, opened the wrong, uh, chest in the Castle." Bill took a deep breath, let it out, and, since he had a leadership level of five, took charge of the situation. "I'm gonna kill you!" Erathsmedor stopped his endless refrain about the Mavin and watched in amazement as Bill chased Liz around his treasure pile, his long green neck knotting as his head swiveled to watch the fleeting adventurers. Finally, he roared, "Stop! Bring me the Shroud of Elsera or I will use the Mavin Sword on all of you!" Panting, the two stopped and looked at each other. Bill shook his finger at Liz and she shrugged. "Hey, it could happen to anyone." The party gathered up their scattered belongings and headed back to Shurugeon Castle vowing to take life a little slower and smell the flowers along the way (before they trampled them). --------------- Yes, this is true story...
