I am about to advance all my starting characters to their first advancement, what guild lvl. should they be? Or does it matter?

Guild level shouldn't matter, just guild affiliation. Since these are your starting characters, you won't be missing out on any traits. However, before you do any more ascensions (after this one), make sure you get all the traits and skills you want before switching again.
