Newbie here - HOW expansion help

Hello, hope someone can help, I have now loaded HOW having just saved ID before going up the staircase. However, just started HOW with all same characters but notice the world map does not offer me the choice to return to any places in ID. Have I installed incorrectly or will they appear as I progress through the game? Also at what point should I download TOLM. Thanks

You cannot return to regular IWD until you complete the assigned quests in the HoW expansion. Hope you brought a bag of holding, you may need it. I don't recall any stores..but it's been awhile since I played. You will enjoy the expansion.

Download TotL ASAP. It's got the final HoW patch in it. Once you're in HoW, you cannot return to IWD until you complete HoW, as ElfBane said. If you do the TotL expansion, you will also finish TotL before you return to IWD. Note that TotL is essentially an expansion within an expansion, so you will start TotL near the end of HoW, finish TotL, then go back and finish HoW, then back to IWD to finish the main game.

ElfBane, there's three places in Lonelywood to buy things: the priest of Waukeen, the ranger, and the innkeeper. I believe you acquire a bag of holding in the HoW expansion, not in IWD.

I just wanted to add that later on after completing some HoW quests you will have the chance to return to IWD areas even before you finish all of HoW (unless you started an only HoW game, which obviously you didn't).

Just be careful, don't start the final quest in IWD unless you did complete HoW. You won't have the chance to go to HoW if you are in the final IWD quest.

Curiosity question then ... I have IWD, HoW, and IWD 2. All are installed. I am currently playing IWD. Am I reading correctly to think that these all seam together? Or are they separate games totally?

IWD1 has 2 expansions,,,,HoW(heart of winter) and TotLM(trials of the luremaster).

IWD2 has no expansions, and is set 20-30 years apart from IWD1.

Thanks for all your help, just one other question - I have started playing HOW (not too far into it though), am I safe to stop playing HOW and start to play TotLM and when I've finished TotLM go back and finish HOW and then after finally finish off the last quest in ID? Would all my characters and items be saved/portable between each game? Thanks once again.

Short answer is yes. TotLM is IMHO a fantastic expansion but once you start you cannot leave until you have finished it, so make sure you are prepared. Have fun.
