How many of you have tried actually using gnomes, halflings, dwarves, and things like pure clerics, druids, bards and such to solo with, or even just to go through the game normally. I've honestly stuck with my own personal favorites quite often, such as human, elf, or half-elf: fighters, rangers or mages, due to the fact that those classes have the most power associated with them. And it's not that i really have anything against halflings gnomes and dwarves, i've just never really tried using them.

Races and classes are often deeply interlinked. Gnome Cleric/Illusionists are very good, as are Dwareven Fighter/Clerics. Halflings are fantastic Fighter/Thieves, so it just depends on which class you want really. If you have one in mind, then choosing the appropriate race is fairly simple. It isn't much different from the choices that you've made previously - unless of course you have something against short people (often with beards).

Gnomes can start out with 19 Int. wich gives 95% chance to learn new spells and takes the roof off of the # you can learn. It can be argued that the Illusionist is the best type of Mage, the biggest spell you loose is Skull Trap. You want a lot of spells, try a Cleric/Illusionist. I love using Dwarves for tanking. You can't beat a 20 Con. and regeneration. Have fun, experiment a little.

But once you hit BG2 you will lose a lot of better spells than skull trap. I prefer Necromancers because IMHO they lose the most useless spells.

I've only tried to solo once - that was with a half-elven ranger/cleric. I got pretty far too, I only really struggled once I hit Baldur's Gate.

I tried soloing through as a LG elven ranger, and was faring well, until I made it to the nashkel mines, and my computer crashed. I haven't really tried to solo since.

Halfling fighter/thiefs rule!!! You get all of the perks of being a thief without being limited to lightweight weapons like short bows and short swords.

Sorry I don't mean to double post like this but after you get the tomes to boost your original rolls you can have a certified butt kicker. If I am remembering right (I am at school not at home where I can check my game) my Halfling (Whose name IS Baggins I would like to point out) has...

STR-18
CON-16 or 17
DEX-20
WIS-12 or 13
INT-11 or 12
CHA-9

So I guess that I would be a prototype Running Back or Wide Reciever in the NFL if I were not 4 foot tall.

Ha ha my friend. Only the very tallest of halflings ever reach the "lofty" heights of four whole feet! The majority mooch about the three foot mark, as a general yard stick.

Sorry about the puns.
