Well, first off you'd need a balanced party. Some people disagree with others on what is a good 'balanced' party, but I'd say approximately: 2 fighters, 1 bard, 1 thief, 1 mage, 1 cleric. You may want to dual/multi class these to allow more classes into the group. Second, choose the race which is best at it. For example, make a age a gnome to get 19 int and make a fighter a dwarf for the extra con (do they get extra str as well?).
Ultimately, though, the decisions are yours... |

Sonic,
You might want to consider using multi-class characters; especially if you are playing the entire IWD/HOW/TOLM series, and even MORE so if you are playing in Heart of Fury mode. It is entirely possible to build a multi-class Elven Fighter-Mage-Thief that reaches 30/30/30 at the end of the game! Two class multi-class characters such as a Ranger/Cleric or Fighter/Druid are also doable. My final party in IWD HOF mode, running through all three parts was: Human Paladin Dwarven Fighter Elven Fighter/Mage/Thief Ranger/Cleric* Fighter/Druid* Elven Fighter/Mage *Don't remember the races on those two I also swapped in a bard at one point in place of the Elven Fighter/Mage. Go with characters that you like playing and don't fret the details TOO much. Having a reasonably well balanced party IS essential and when playing HOF mode that implies a SIGNIFICANT amount of Summoning and Area effect spell capability!

Going solo?
Are you playing all three sections and are you playing on HoF mode or standard difficulty?

Soloing a bard (any single class) will be a difficult challenge.
I did a half-elf Fighter/Cleric/Mage without any real difficulty on normal, that I recommend turning the difficulty up a notch or two for this class could be a good idea as the undead areas are quite easy. I have heard people who have had difficulty with a Fighter/Mage/Thief because they got stuck at the Yuan-Ti summoner. A cleric has some spells that will easily get you past this. This combo provides you with all the necessary thief skills: knock, find Traps, and mirror image for disarming traps. Most importantly it has healing and buff spells as you require them. I would agree with Pritchke's lead about playing a multi-class: either FMT or FCM. IIRC, I have seen posts on just about every single class being soloed with various degrees of success so apparently it IS doable.

Try a cleric/ranger or a ranger dual-classed to cleric or a pure ranger.
