How do you check what your reputation is (it's a number like 15...)?

It's on your personal information sheet, or 'character sheet'. Also, read page 73-74, and 143-146 in your gaming manual, it will explain everything.

Oh man I would but I got the Tales of the sword coast expansion man and it didn't come with a manual!

Oh and by the way, do you have to do quests to lower/raise your reputation!

In order to raise your rep., yes. in order to drop it, no.

You can also raise your rep by making donations at the temple. You usually start out at rep 10. If you have a rep of 1 (villain) the cost to raise it one point is $500, 2 is $400, 3 is $300, 4,5, and 6 is $200, 7-11 is $100, 12-13 is $200, 14-15 is $300, 16 is 400, 17 is 500. Once you are at a reputation of 18, you can no longer increase it through donations, only actions. Remember, each donation of the respective amount only raises your rep one single point. There are a couple of other tables within the manual that explain the effects that your rep has on the game. I'm not going to post all that information for you, and I'm not sure of a good site that would have that information available for you either. Maybe someone else knows of a link that they can give you, sorry.
