On the last level, first room on the left there is a book case with a secret compartment. How do you open it? I tried a knock spell but it just stated it was warded against spells. Do you put something on the shelf to open it?

There is a stone lever on the wall. You need to click on the level to open the door. Examine the wall carefully, the level is fairly obvious.

Thanks but I believe you are referring to the torturers chamber. This is the 2nd part of the first room. The room has 3 chests and a book case. Any ideas?

Ashsays,

First off... Welcome to the forum!!!

I think I know the room you are talking about --> sort of a large homey-looking multilevel living room / den that you enter from a south door, just before you make the hairpin turn to follow the main path to the south. IIRC I looted that place with no problems. Now your post is making me think maybe I missed something? Hard to believe, since I have HoW installed and make generous use of the alt key.

I will go back to a saved game and look; but I'll bet you get your answer long before I get home to my machine.

I'm in that level too. The only problem is that I also went by the room already... Now i'm wondering if there is something else.. I remember the bookcase and I thought nothing of it when I found that there wasn't anything in there.. I'm going to go back to look and see.

I also wanted to say welcome!

I went back to the room and found nothing! Hmm, I wonder why they put the empty bookcase there then?

Ashsays,

Hmmm.. I guess the forum is slowing down a bit: I expected you would have your answer long before now...

I back tracked a party, this last weekend, that I had saved in D.E. 5. Now, I know that I know the room you are talking about --> sort of a large homey-looking multilevel living room / den with a fire pit in the center. It is the second room in the the first possible exit from the main path that you can make after you get to the 5th (last) level of D.E. There is a large chest against the north wall, about the 12 o'clock position relative to the fire. Then next to it, at about 1 o'clock is an identical chest. Next to that, still against the wall and at about the 1:30 position, is the large bookcase you asked about. Then, at about the 2:30 position and much closer to the fire, is a smaller chest.

Acckkk!! Am I going to have to replay this before I remember what happened? I thinned out some of my saved games; and the latest saved game I have BEFORE going into that room is at the start of D.E. lvl 4. I really don't remember having a problem; and when I returned to the room, the book case was open to my perusal.

Time for a simple question: Do you have a thief?

If you do have a thief, and I did get the room right, and you don't get your answer soon; I will load up and battle my way down to D.E. 5 and take a look. Come to think of it, that level was a neat one to play...

Ashsays,

Are you talking about the room immediately after the shallow steps corridor or the room after that room? I recall having a difficult time opening some things there and no amount of forcing the lock or picking would help. However, I went back before leaving the level and was able to do it then.

I'm also confused about the bookcase with a secret compartment. Does the entire book case light up or just a shelf? You seem to have access to the book case, because you suspect it's a matter of putting an item there. Could it be that it's an empty bookcase and what you're seeing is all there is? Do you get a message that say's "locked" or, when you try to pick it, does it say, "lock pick failed?"

Inquiring minds want to know.

The room has two sections to it. The first has a death fog trap in the corridor. It is the first room on the left on level 5. The bookcase is in the adjoining room. The reason I believe there is a secret compartment is I tried a Knock spell on it and gave me the message the bookcase "is warded vs. simple spells etc" which is used in other parts of the game. Example: TOLM when you set the chalice on the alter to revel the secret door. This is why I believe you need to set some thing on the bookcase to revel the secret compartment. Maybe they just put an empty bookcase? But I think there is something there. How do you get to it ? ………I dunno?!?!?!?

Yeah, I wonder if we will ever find out if there really is anything in that bookcase?
