Xero279, did you not like IWD1?
Aside from the fact that IWD2 uses the 3rd Ed DnD rules, IWD2 is somewhat similar to IWD1. Linear story. Create your entire party. No joinable NPC's. I enjoyed both the IWD and BG games, despite their differences. |

Apart from Dragon's Eye you revisit two other area's from IWD1, but all three have changed a lot. New baddies (or tougher old ones), new puzzles, etcetera. Gameplay is similar to IWD1, obviously, in that it's mainly hack & slash-oriented with minor emphasis on the storyline, but due to the new ruleset it has a very different feel. Personally, I'm enjoying it immensely and I think it's better than it's predecessor, although naturally it has it's flaws.

I prefered 1 over 2 by a considerable margin. 2 is just so frustrating that I didn't finish it. I got to the hand and I'd had enough by then.
It was even more linear than 1, I just didn't enjoy it. It was a slog against dozens and dozens of monsters, they literally surround you constantly. That said character creation was great and the 3rd ed rules worked well.

Icewind Dale II is far better than its predecessor, mainly because of the 3rd edition rules implementation and the abundance of cool items that your guys come across.
My complaints are the same though....the storyline is a little too linear, and the game is still chock-full of hack'n'slash at the expense of actual substance/story/dialogue. It definitely helps that Skill scores are implemented into the dialogue options though, and its cool how some classes get dialogue options and can advance the plot differently than other classes can. Overall, I think its a fun game. Like any other, it has its flaws but if you are a big fan of BGI&II and nostalgic about the Infinity Engine's swansong (this game) then go out and buy it. It's fun.
