I read the tables, but in game terms what's the diff b/w 17 & 18 int? I found the tome of intelligence, and am debating whether to give it to Dynaheir or to Imoen (in preparation for BG2 ).

Aside from anything: always give those tomes to your player-character.

Fact #1: Some of the NPCs from BG1 also show up in BG2.

Fact #2: Their stats may have changed somewhat in the transition.

Fact #3: Any Tomes given to them in BG1 will have NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER on their stats in BG2.

True, but I was thinking of porting their stats at the end of BG1 to BG2, using SK.

Okay, but as long as it's their exact stats. Changing the Imoen in BG2 to match the Imoen you had at the end of BG1 is kosher, but giving Jaheira the Manual of Quickness of Action in BG1, letting her get her DEX boost in BG2, and hacking her another DEX point to "reflect" the Tome you gave her would not be kosher, in my opinion.

(Of course, if you DO play with Imoen you'll have to do it twice, but at least it lets you make her a Swashbuckler & postpone her Dualing level, which is what I did.)

I am more inclined to give it to Immy (she's 17 Int, now). Besides being able to learn all spells per level, & having a better chance of successfully memorising spells (if you play by core rules in BG2), higher lore, is there any other diff b/w a mage with 17 int & 18 int, like spells per level that the mage can cast, etc??

There IS a difference, but only for the PC. Your INT determines the maximum level of spells your character can learn and/or cast. Looking at the INT table on my site, I see that the PC must have an INT of 18 or better to cast 9th level spells. The NPC mages are exempt from this restriction--if they weren't, nobody would use any Mage but the ONE Mage in BG2 who has 18 INT.
