I was wondering whether or not Icewind Dale is worth buying. Is it fun to play?

I personally found it a lot of fun. But it really depends on your taste. IWD is a bit more combat-oriented than the BG series, although not a lot. There are a more dungeons, a bit like BG2 in comparison to BG1. I think it would be safe to say that if you enjoy BG, you'll more likely than not enjoy IWD too.

EDIT: And besides, it should be available at a low price by now, so that makes it a bit more worth buying.

IMO, I think IWD is a great game. Especially when you add on HOW and the TOL download. It is different than BG1 and BG2, in that there are no npc's to add to your party - you build the entire IWD party at the beginning. There are no romance subplots as in BG2. Both IWD and BG2 series have a LOT of combet, but the absence of the npc dialogues, romances etc makes IWD appear to be more combat intensive.

Link,

I have not played BG1 nor BG2; but am having a blast with IWD! I was playing IWD stand-alone, then got How (and ToTL) installed: Much, MUCH better!

From the many posts I have seen, IWD with HoW/TOTL expansions, is somewhere between BG1 and BG2 in length, graphics and control interface quality. IWD has a shallower plot; but more combat than BG1 and allows characters to attain higher levels (level 30 with HoW installed). "Heart of Fury" mode, available with HoW expansion, greatly increases replay value.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I should hurry myself to the stores now, and buy it. I'll finish BG1 first, cos otherwise that game will lie around useless at home

I have the series, and IWD is a cool game. But your playing the best one IMPO at the moment, make sure you finish BG1 first.

I agree with Lavindathar. At least about finishing BG1 first. Make sure you install TotSC as well and do the entire game before you start IWD.

Thats the way I did it, I did that twice before bothering with IWD, and IMPO, it is too much based on fight after fight, so therefore not as good as BG1, but still good!!!

I just bought it for the second time last monday, I lost my copy of it, when I moved last summer but saw it very cheap in a second hand store and bought it, and it is just as great as I remembered it being. But it is not as good As BG2 though, could use a stronger story and not be so linear.

Considering the hours/$ ratio it is very good buy!
Hours=Hours of playing time.
