I am on the final level of watchers keep I have overcome two of the three gangs of guardians before breaking the final seal. The third wave consists of the Merilith,A hive mother beholder, and four tough nasties..I've reloaded almost ten times fighting them in different ways. The last time I managed to get the Merilith dead, but by that point I was the only one left alive and wasn't alive very long with all the other monsters tackling me. I have taken every possible,to my knowledge,pre-battle preparation that I can. We cast Chaotic commands, protection from evil, bless, chant, resist fear. I have my mages (Jan and Imoen) cast protection spells on themselves. I have Anomen with the shield of Balduran,Minsc with the funky Foesbane bastard sword and saving grace.Jaheira turns into a fire elemental. And I ,the undead hunter, have the cloak of mirroring on and have tackled them with either Carsomyr or Crom Feyr. I've had Imoen and Jan cast Finger of Death (doesn't do any good),Chaos Sphere (no good),
Mordenkainen's sword (partial sucess though the first one got obliterated). I've summoned monsters, tried insect swarm, creeping doom, making ugly faces..Does anyone know how to whip these critters down to size?

This is an incredible hard battle, one of the hardest you will do. I said to myself FINALLY, a real fight, not some dumb giths or flayers again.

I had to fight these guys also a few times to beat them, they are tough. Here is what I did.

This is a powerful party, very strong. Its gonna be hard to beat them. I summoned 5 monsters to take the brunt of the first attacks. They usually clear through summoned monsters pretty fast, I just used them for slowing them down. I had 5 guys up north by the north room (with a door).
I had one guy go down and activate the 3rd seal. I then used a potion of invisibility and ran north. The appearing guys went to work on my summoned monsters while my 1 guy ran north.
My 5 guys north cast some area spells, so that the enemy would be walking through cloudkills and death fogs on their way up to me. It doesn't hurt them much, but any bit helps.
I kept one guy just out of reach, and my other 5 moved back into the far back of the north room. One guy uses invisibility potion and waited by the door. I led the enemy team north with my one BAIT guy. They followed, and once a couple of them entered the north room, my invisible guy closed the door.
Thus I split up their team. My 6 guys went full out killing the guys that were trapped with me. After they were dead, I fully rested, and prepared spells and such again for the others. Then I powered up, opened the doors, and took on the guys stuck outside the door.
You'd think the enemy would learn how to open a simple door. And no, this didn't work the first time, They like to stop right where the door would close, and you can't close it.

But its a fun fight! Thank god they have some hard foes in the game. And this was against my power party, 5 strong fighter/mages with dual grandmaster weapons and full mage spells (timestop, etc) and was still tough. Those guys have some major HP.

Thank you Sunder I will try this technique. I note that the wands of spellstrike seem to come in handy with the Merilith as it always casts protection from magical weapons on itself.Jan has boots of speed I think I will use him for the bait....

Yeah...one other thing, Greater Whirlwind is god with this battle...but it still took me 2 characters dead and a ton of summoned creatures, including a fire elemental, Skeleton Warrior (magic resistance!) and a planetar and 2 devas. It's an incredibly hard battle.

another fighter ability that's good to use in major battles where enemies have a lot of hit points is critical strike - every hit's a natural 20 (which means double damage.) This special ability coupled with a potion of storm giant strength turned sarevok into a madman (he did 182 points of damage to *something* with one hit.)
