hey all

i'm going to solo the game with a chaotic evil dwarven fighter from the start of BG1 all the way to the end of TOB.

I have some questions regarding the feasibility of role playing.

Having low reputation means that items are far more expensive. The only way to remotely dampen this would be to have high charisma. I feel that this is slightly 'unevil' as i don't think an evil character would not wield much charisma. Anybody else have thoughts on this?

Also, does anybody think that installing a patch that introduces virtue or threatening to kill the shopkeeper seem fair? Can anybody recommend one for BG1 and BG2.

Thanks to all for thier oppinions!

Why wouldn’t an evil individual have a high Charisma? Hitler had a very high charisma.

Further why would an evil character spurn a high reputation? Wouldn’t it be the height of evil to be evil and have people love and praise you?
An evil person would consider a good reputation and the benefits of a discount from shopkeepers as just things they so rightly deserve.

Kind of depends on the kind of chaotic evil character you are making. He could be the kind of evil character that kills people because it's fun, like Korgan. Or he could be a cunning, manipulative, lying and cheating characterr, to whom micromanipulating reputation would be only good roleplaying.

-Simply put, I don't think there is a genuinely viable way to RP an evil character with a high rep, sheerly because to get the high rep you need to do either - charitable and well meaning quest options or donate plenty money to the temples, neither of which any of my evil PC's would ever consider

Doesn't reputation increase even if you donate to evil temples? That seems like a nice compromise.

Is no one going to mention the Virtue mod? (www.pocketplane.net)

Or the mod that grants lower store prices for low reputations ("Gee, if you overcharge me for this, I can't guarantee that your store won't burn down in the night") as well as high ones? ("I'm on this quest to destroy all Evil in the Realms, and it'd sure be nice if you helped me out.")

What if the PC picks the charitable and well meaning quest options and donates money to the temples only to make people think that he's a good guy so that he could get a discount in stores? Many real-world rich people give money to charity so they wouldn't have to pay taxes. If you have 100 000 gold, you can easilly give some away. Consider it an investment.

Or install the negative reputation discount mod. (Although I think it shouldn't work on people richer and more powerful than you, like the Adventurers Mart.)

As Makevelli said, "The ends justify the means." If you are evil, do what you've got to do so that you can get what you want.

[/QUOTE]To me that sounds like playing the game as a good guy and just pretending to be evil, IMO an evil character wouldnt go about doing any do gooder quests, instead just maiming and robbing without giving a care for his reputation.

The mod mentioned regarding discount for low rep characters does appeal to me tho.

Alignments aren't binding contracts. They're guidlines that provide a base for the character's overall standpoint. In other words, they're the AVERAGE of the character, of their views and actions.

A good character could potentially find justification to do something evil (Like say..... razing a town so a plague doesn't spread.)

Likewise an evil character could find justification to do something good.
