Starting an 'evil party' game with a NE necromancer as main character and using all evil NPCs.
I'm thinking that wantonly killing innocents and having to fight the Flaming Fist (and their damned wizards) everywhere I go might get old fast. It might be a more interesting game to play as evily as possible while still trying to keep rep as high as possible. That is, evil does not equate to stupid. Also, to play purely Chaotic Evil, Atilla the Hun style, and kill everything in sight would probably require a custom party with at least several uber fighters. Anyway, your thoughts on 'smart evil' vs. 'barabarian evil' styles of game?

Defo smart evil.
Barbarian evil wouldn't get you anywhere. Prices would be high, and it would rule out you going too the same places in quick succesion. Defo smart evil. That way, it can be fun. My current game, i am NE Theif. But my party is mainly good.

quote: I prefer the intelligent evil to the hack/slash evil- it's much more appealing to me. I tried the hack/slash technique out on a mid-game save, and it really didn't make the game fun. Basically, while in town, you had bounty hunter after bounty hunter walking up saying, "Heya" just before trying to remove your head from your body. I love the necromancer class, by the way- it's my favorite. You should post about how it goes for you. Also, I never saw if you finished your specialist mage party- how did that work out? It was a bit hairy in the beginning, but the mages really came into their own recently. I took a little break from that game last week but they are at level 5 now. I gave up on trying to cast spells before ever using a weapon--it's possible to do, but would require way too much resting (especially early on) to be fun. So they all hurl away with their slings in the run of the mill map clearing encounter.
Actually, it is the cleric that has made all the difference in the game. He's so decked out in magical gear (Dark Side gives clerics some great items) that he's taking very little damage from weapons anymore. Due to a weak feature of the AI, most of the monster races will swarm a lone meleer and basically leave everyone else alone (although kobolds can be a wicked exception to this rule, as some will attack the back line and try to stab the mages with their poisoned daggers). So I keep the cleric out front, and when the enemy engages he stands there meleeing, drawing most of the fire. Then the mages zap away with their spells. Definitely more interesting than shooting arrows and slashing away with swords.

quote: Sounds fun. I usually play mage-heavy parties, too. Those darts of wounding are the best! Once, I was playing with an all female party, except Edwin, and I had decided to go get Shar-Teel. Well, she decided that, since Edwin was the only male, she should fight him (despite talking about taking on your best male WARRIOR). I had him run from her and hurl the darts at intervals and he actually beat her to the point where she agreed to join. It was a really silly fight with Edwin running almost to the bottom of the map before he hit her enough for her to yeild. And, isn't it odd that Shar-Teel won't join an all female party? She claims to hate men so, but I think she has a secret desire to be near them! It must be those issues with her father. ![]() Katherine |

I just added Shar Teel to the evil party today, actually. She replaced Xzar since the main character is a necromancer and I currently need another tank. (Too bad, Xzar is one of the funniest characters.) Current party:
necromancer Edwin Montaron Kagain Viconia Shar Teel In retrospect, I now sort of wish I had used a fighter as my main character so that I could have an archer. As it stands I don't have one, and I have heard that despite his special ability to make poisoned arrows Eldoth doesn't have any profs in the bow either when he joins. Shar Teel will be too valuable meeleing with a sword to equip with a bow, I think, i.e., I'll want her out in front hacking and slashing in full plate. Monty joins with two profs in missiles, so in order to capitalize on that strength he will stick with the crossbow and will eventually use the light crossbow of speed. (I'm using evil NPCs only, so Safana and Skie are out.) Anyway, I think I'll drop Kagain when Eldoth becomes available and see if I can get him using a bow. I've never used him/done his quest. Speaking of Shar Teel, I was sort of amused today at something that happened after the group fought off some flinds and skeletons in front of High Hedge. Just after the fight Viconia evidently paid Shar Teel a compliment (or? I was on the phone and just missed whatever she said) and Shar Teel responded "Flattery will get you nowhere." I looked through Viconia's random and happy lines and there are a couple of interesting things that Viconia might have said there. That is too funny that Edwin beat Shar Teel with darts. I think that contest may be scripted for her to join regardless of who she's fighting. [ 01-11-2002: Message edited by: Lemernis ]

quote: Oh yeah, I saw that interaction, too. It was weird. It was almost like Viconia was flirting with her! At least, that's how it could seem given Shar-Teel's reaction... Katherine |

I think Viconia's line is "You are one of the few among us I can respect," or something very close to that. Understandable, since she's a Drow, and therefore knows quite well that anything with a penis is little more than a semimoronic tool, designed to be used by the naturally superior females. I don't know why Shar-teel's response to that line is so negative, I'd expect her to get along with Viconia perfectly!
Shar-teel: Do you capitalize the T?

I think Shar-teel is the right spelling now that you mention it, Six. The spelling I used appears on the following link, which I have bookmarked as a quick reference for stats, spells, items, etc. (there is more comprehensive information re: stats in Duncan Clay's walkthroughs, but this page's left menu bar includes other useful sections about the game as well):
http://www.planetbaldursgate.com/bg/encounters/npcs Viconia and Shar-teel apparently had the same interaction again last night and "You are one of the few among us whom I can respect" was indeed Viconia's line. Given what Katherine noted about Shar-teel maybe actually identifying more with men than women (the anti-male schtick then constituting a 'reaction formation' in psychoanalytic terms) I was hoping she has said "Male, fetch me something to eat!"

quote: That would have been even funnier! Shar-teel is quite the character and I love the fact that we get to meet her father and watch that interaction eventually. Viconia says the "Male, fetch me something to eat" line all the time in my MP party and the only male is Edwin and he ignores her. This is a line she does when happy? How strange. I tried that line out on my boyfriend recently, by the way. However, It didn't go over too well- I still had to cook dinner. Drat!
